CHAPTER ONE

Jessica

"Happy Birthday!" shouted several people as I entered the break room at work. Completely caught off guard, I froze in terror as I looked around at my coworkers. After regaining my senses, I forced a polite smile at all of them.

"Thanks, you guys," I said, trying to sound as nice as possible. "You didn't have to do all this for me." My best friend, Kristy, waved a hand dismissively at me as she smiled at me.

"What are you talking about?" she demanded. "Of course, we had to. It's not every day someone turns twenty-four. Have a little fun." Seeing the rest of our coworkers watching me expectantly, I smiled at them all.

"Thanks, everyone," I said once again, trying to sound polite as I spoke. "I do appreciate it all." Seeing the birthday cake with the lit candles, I took a deep breath and blew them all out.

"Let's get some cake," shouted someone from the back of the room, but I quit paying attention at that point.

I wasn't sure who's idea this all was, but I was convinced that it was by accident. No one at work knew I was a Little, and I preferred to keep it that way, even if it meant suffering through something as embarrassing as this. So, when I was offered a piece of vanilla cake, my least favorite cake, I sat down and tried to make conversation with the other employees.

Everyone seemed surprised that it was my birthday, which seemed a bit strange, but I accepted their well wishes as they gave them. The last thing I wanted was to make everyone feel bad for this kind gesture. So, as everyone came up to wish me a happy birthday and make small talk with me, I did everything to remain calm.

"Happy Birthday," said one of the many well-wishers as he approached. I wanted to tell him where to shove it, but I stopped when I looked up at him.

It was Dr. Grant Jones, one of the residential doctors here at the nursing home. He might have been twice the age of most of us, but he was the one doctor every nurse and intern was attracted to. What was even more interesting was that he was paying attention to me. Smiling, I did everything in my power to not panic.

"Thanks, Dr. Jones," I told him, my eyes on him as I spoke. "Was this all your idea?" He shook his head.

"Unfortunately, I didn't know until I got here," he admitted. "Otherwise, I would have helped set everything up." Disappointment started to set in as I tried to remain as calm as I had been.

"That's okay," I reassured him. "Thank you, though." He smiled as he nodded in response.

"So, do you have any special plans for your birthday?" he asked, and my heart leaped for joy.

Was he asking me out? It certainly felt that way, and I wanted nothing more than for the answer to be yes. Taking a moment to put my thoughts together, I shook my head.

"Not really," I informed him. "I get off at four today, but other than that, my day is pretty open." He smiled as he looked around, almost as if he wanted to share a secret with me.

"How would you like to meet up after work for a special birthday surprise?" he asked, confirming the hope I felt. I had to do everything in my power not to freak out.

He was asking me out! I couldn't believe my luck. I had feared this birthday for as long as I can remember, knowing that it was supposed to be my last chance to find a Daddy before I was deemed too old. After taking a moment to collect myself, I shrugged.

"I suppose that sounds like fun," I said, trying to play it cool. "Who all would be there?" He thought for a moment before shaking his head.

"Just you and me," he reassured me, confirming what I had suspected. "That is unless you want someone else there." Looking around, I shook my head.

"No, just the two of us is fine," I agreed. "I don't want it to get too crowded while we try to get to know each other." A mischievous smile spread across his face as he nodded in agreement.

"Perfect," he said before lowering his voice. "It will be just you, me, and the best birthday you've ever had." He leaned forward, his lips just inches from my ear as he spoke. "It'll be a birthday you'll never forget." A cold chill ran down my spine as he pulled away, and I took a deep breath to calm my nerves.

"Sounds great," I agreed, trying to keep my voice as natural as possible. "I can't wait." He nodded and made his way to the other side of the break room, and I made small talk with yet another well-wisher.

After we all returned to work, I couldn't take my mind off Grant and his invitation to continue celebrating my birthday later on. Every nurse had their eyes on Grant, and I couldn't believe that he wanted to make my birthday even more special out of all the women who worked at the nursing home. It felt like a dream or a birthday wish come true. While I was still daydreaming about Grant and what magical plans he had in store for me, Kristy came up to see me.

"Hey," she said as she pushed her janitorial cart down the halls. "Sorry I didn't get to see you in the break room. I had to take care of Mr. Johnson and his new dog. The thing peed all over the kitchen floor, and he nearly tripped over it trying to clean up." I waved a hand dismissively at her.

"It's no problem," I reassured her. Remembering that she was the only person who knew about my birthday besides me, I tilted my head to the side. "Are you the one responsible for the party in the first place?" She smiled as she nodded at me.

"Yep," she admitted without a hint of remorse. "I know you said that you didn't want to do anything special, but everyone deserves a great birthday. Besides, before I left, I saw Dr. Jones talking to you." Immediately, my face went red in embarrassment, and she nudged my arm. "You want to talk about it?" Knowing that I couldn't keep it a secret forever, I sighed and shook my head at her.

"Dr. Jones asked me out to dinner for my birthday," I informed her, and her jaw dropped as she stared at me in shock.

"No way," she said with a gentle smile. When I nodded in response, she took me by the shoulders. "Tell me everything."
