CHAPTER TWO
Grant
Life as a doctor in a nursing home was more tedious than I ever anticipated. It was a lot more relaxing than working in the emergency room, but I was already missing my old life. The only thing that made coming to work worth it anymore was the opportunity to get to see Jessica.
She was a med student currently working as an intern at the nursing home. Her bouncy bronze-colored hair and green eyes had brightened my day the first time I met her, and she had been in my sights ever since. I had been looking for the perfect opportunity to ask her out for the past few months, but thanks to the way the other nurses seemed to get jealous anytime I spoke to anyone but them, I decided to keep my distance. The last thing I wanted to do was cause trouble for her and make the nurses hate her any more than they already did.
The full-time nurses hated the interns and often made their lives miserable. Recently, they caused one intern to quit and choose a different major after tricking her into what they called a "Code Brown." The poor woman was covered from head to toe, and she soon found out that one of the nurses supposedly slipped some laxative into the resident's food that day. Of course, the nurse was fired, but the poor intern never recovered and quit the same day.
I didn't know what their problem was. I didn't interact with any of them, yet they always followed me around, practically begging for my attention. At first, I didn't mind the attention and found it a bit comedic, but it became downright annoying after hearing what happened to the intern. I couldn't go anywhere at work or speak to anyone, especially not another female, without the crowd that would gather.
However, when Jessica replaced the intern, it became impossible to keep my eyes off her. Not only was she the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, but she was also the sweetest person in the nursing home. She treated everyone nicely, and she was always making everyone smile thanks to her intoxicating personality. Even though it seemed impossible that anyone would wish her harm, I refused to take that chance until I had a reasonable excuse.
After hearing that it was her birthday, I knew I had the perfect excuse to ask her out without angering the other nurses. No one would suspect that a birthday dinner was a date, especially right after a hard day at work. If anything, they might just think that I was being nice and would expect it for their birthdays, too. They would be disappointed when they finally learned the truth, but by then, I planned to have Jessica all to myself and far from the reach of the other nurses.
"Hey, Dr. Jones," called out Betty, one of the few nurses I regularly visited. She was the shift manager and close friends with Georgia in Human Resources, so no one dared to mess with her. Drawing closer, she smiled up at me. “I was hoping I would catch you before you took off to your rounds.” Concerned by her words, especially since Betty never came to me throughout the shift unless it was urgent, I frowned.
"Is everything okay?" I asked, and she sighed as she held up her clipboard.
"Things have been better," she commented as she showed it to me. "Dr. Preston just canceled on me, and I need someone to cover the overnight shift. Do you think you can cover for him?" Groaning, I wished I could have punched him.
Dr. Malcolm Preston was a snobby rich man who treated his work as a game and rarely showed up to his shift. Usually, they would have threatened to fire him, but when they realized he was only working to kill time, they realized it wouldn't do much good. So, they were already working on replacing him before they fired him. Meanwhile, everyone simply tolerated him.
"I wish I could," I told Betty, wishing that I hadn't been put in this situation, "but I already made plans for tonight that I can't get out of." Seeming surprised by this, Betty raised an eyebrow at me.
"You never turn down an extra shift," she replied, sounding just as surprised as she looked. "What's going on? You're not in any trouble, are you?" Immediately, I shook my head at her.
"No, but I will be if I cancel my plans tonight," I informed her. "I'm taking a friend out for her birthday." Suspicious, Betty tilted her head to the side.
"Does this friend have a name?" she asked, and I winced.
If I mentioned that it was Jessica, Betty might make her stay for the overnight shift. I didn't want to put Jessica at risk, especially after I had just gotten up the nerves to ask her out. Even though Betty wasn't the type, I was still hesitant. Before I could come up with an answer, Betty smiled at me.
"It's Jessica, isn't it?" she asked. Immediately, my heart sank in my chest as I stared at her in shock.
"How did you know?" I asked, a million questions running through my head at once. Rather than answering my question, Betty threw her head back and burst into laughter.
"I didn't," she admitted, still laughing, "but I do now." Shaking her head at me, she continued. "It's about time, in my opinion. You aren't exactly what I would consider subtle." Confused, I stared at her.
"What are you talking about?" I asked. "Of course, I'm subtle. I had everyone here fooled until you brought it up." Taking a deep breath to calm herself, she shook her head at me.
"No, Grant, you aren't," she pointed out. "If you hadn't been trying to hide it from the other nurses, I would’ve suspected that the two of you were already seeing each other." Nudging me with her elbow, she winked. "You know what I mean?" Immediately, I realized what she meant and shook my head at her.
"You won't tell anyone, will you?" I asked, genuinely worried about Jessica. "The other nurses would do worse than a Code Brown if they knew, especially since they all seem to have a thing for me." Betty sighed and shook her head in response.
"Of course not," she reassured me. "Jessica is the best intern we have, and I wouldn't wish the anger of the other nurses on my worst enemy. Your secret is safe with me." Looking back at her clipboard, she shook her head. "I suppose it's about time Malcolm did his job anyway. You go have fun tonight and leave everything to me." Grateful for her kind gesture, I smiled at her.
"Thanks, Betty," I told her. "I owe you one." She scoffed as she started back towards her office.
"You owe me more than one," she called out over her shoulder. "Have fun tonight." With that, she disappeared into the office, and I continued on my rounds.
CHAPTER THREE
Jessica
Before I got off work, Dr. Jones found me and told me that he wasn't going to be able to take me out until later that night, thanks to Dr. Preston. I told him that he didn't have to take me out, but he insisted. Meanwhile, I made my way home and quickly changed out of my scrubs, and got into the shower.
While the hot water melted away the stress from the day, I couldn't help but think about Dr. Jones, who was already insisting that I call him Grant. He was everything a Little like me could ask for, and the fact that he was a doctor made him all the more appealing. I had heard rumors that doctors were the best in bed, especially when they were Daddies. They liked to give you everything at night, and in the morning, they were effective at curing the morning after soreness.
