CHAPTER ONE

Sandra

“What on Earth is that?” demanded Will as he entered the kitchen after taking off his shoes at the door, a look of disgust on his face as he looked over my shoulder at the contents of the pan on the stove.

“It’s dinner,” I informed him, trying to keep my voice as calm and polite as possible. “I thought you might be hungry when you got home.” Apparently, this was the wrong thing to say, and Will didn’t waste any time telling me so.

“That looks like vomit and diarrhea had a baby in the pan,” he remarked, his voice low and dangerous as hints of anger started to show through. “I thought we were having pizza tonight!” Not wanting to anger him any more than I already had, especially after smelling the stench of old beer on his clothing, I smiled at him.

“I’m sorry,” I told him, trying to defuse the situation before things got out of hand. “I’ll call and order the pizza right now.” Making my way over to the bedroom, where my cell phone and wallet were, I knew that the best thing to do in order to escape his drunken rage would be to comply and not argue.

I always kept twenty dollars of emergency money in my wallet at all times for just such an occasion. Whenever Will came home drunk, which was practically every time he came home, he would demand that I buy him pizza rather than feed him whatever I had been making for dinner, then he would retreat to the living room to watch whatever he could find on TV until he passed out, his stomach full of cheap pizza and beer. When he was finally asleep, I would be allowed a chance to sneak out to my night job and work until the early morning, only to return home just before he would wake up and go to work.

Much to my surprise, when I opened my purse to retrieve the money and my phone, neither were in my purse. My phone was gone, and my wallet was empty. Even my ID and social security card were gone. Realizing what this meant, I winced and contemplated my life choices and why I was still with Will.

If Will had come to the bedroom to take everything from my wallet before demanding that I order pizza for him, this meant that he was in a fighting mood. Normally, he was in this mood due to the type of day he had been having, but there was always the chance that he was truly upset at me for something I had or hadn’t done. So, as I cautiously made my way over to the living room, I ran through the list of chores that were expected of me throughout the day to see if it was possible anything wasn’t to his liking.

“Will, have you seen my phone?” I asked as I entered the living room. Will, who was already in his underwear and undershirt, was sitting in his usual spot on the couch with a beer in one hand and the remote in the other. At first, he didn’t seem to notice me, so I continued. “I need it to order your pizza.” Finally, he looked up at me, a strange and unexpected look on his face.

“You’re grounded from it,” he informed me as he stared up at me, and a cold chill ran up my spine as I stared at him in horror. “Until you tell me exactly who all you’ve been sneaking around with, you’re not getting it back.” Confused by what he meant, I frowned in confusion.

“I haven’t been sneaking around,” I reassured him. “Why on Earth would I sneak around with anyone, especially when I have you?” By the time I realized this was the wrong reaction, it was much too late for me to even take a step back to avoid his outburst. As soon as I blinked, he was on his feet, and his hand was at my throat.

“Do you think I’m a fool or an idiot?” he hissed as he clutched at my throat. “I know you’re sneaking around, and I thought you knew better than to lie to me.” Holding up my phone, he pressed the warm glass of the screen against my face. “There’s plenty of people who’ve confirmed it, and I found several people in your phone I don’t know…” Despite the closeness of the screen, I saw the contact profile of Rebecca, my coworker at the local bakery and coffee shop that I had been working at in order to help prepare dough and batters in order to help preparation for the morning rush go much smoother. “Now, tell me who Rebecca is?” Wheezing for air, I felt his grip tighten and felt the hopelessness start to set in as I stood there, tears welling up in my eyes as I struggled to speak.

“My boss,” I gasped, trying to get the words out before he strangled me. “She’s… My… Boss…” My vision had just started to go dark when I heard the knock on the door, and Will released me immediately. Originally, I thought it had been my imagination, but, when he looked confused as he stared at the door, I realized that someone had unknowingly come to my rescue.

“Who the hell could that be?” he asked, sounding both confused and a tiny bit worried as he turned to look back at me. When I didn't say anything, he rolled his eyes. "Go answer the door! We'll continue this conversation later." Nodding absentmindedly in response, I made my way over to the door and opened it.

There were three men on the other side of the door, each and every one of them towering over me like mountains more than men. Each of them were dressed in a similar manner, wearing ripped jeans, muscle shirts, and hiking boots, and they all looked like they were toughened by time doing hard labor. The first man, the clean shaven one with the icy blue eyes, frowned in confusion when he saw me, but his confusion was quickly replaced when he saw Will standing behind me, a look of terror on his face as he backed away from the door.

"How the hell did you find me?" Will asked, his lip trembling as he backed away from the door. "I never told you where I lived." The man chuckled as he and the other two entered the apartment, completely ignoring me.

"That's why we followed you around," he said, his voice as cold and icy as his eyes. "It's time you pay up on your loan."

CHAPTER TWO

Rafael

As soon as I saw Sandra open the door, I felt confused and was starting to wonder if we had the wrong address. Even though she didn’t recognize me, I recognized her from when I would visit the bakery and coffee shop early in the mornings. She was the overnight baker who helped Rebecca and Megan with their daily tasks, and she looked both exhausted and scared as she stared up at us. When I saw Will, I knew right away we had the right place, and Rebecca’s suspicions were confirmed.

Rebecca had been trying to convince me to follow Sandra and see what her life was like outside work. According to her, Sandra was a sweet, soft spoken woman who was very obedient and a bit jumpy when it came to being around other people. Despite the fact that she worked in the bakery and prepared multiple batches of cookie dough and batters, she never once rolled up her sleeves and seemed as though she was afraid to return home. Now that I had found her outside work, I finally knew why.

Will was a regular at the bar Eric ran, and he was anything but polite. He worked a construction job in the city, and he always seemed to be spending all his money at the bar, especially when he kept an open and running tab. Since Chase was worried about seeming weak in front of our new enemies, he had agreed to let me and my men collect any and all debts owed to the group. We were a lot more practiced and convincing when confronted by the police, but none of us had ever been to prison since we agreed to go legit.

“What are you doing here?” asked Will as he gathered his courage and made his way forward to confront Richard, Patrick, and I. “I thought I had paid what I needed to.” Immediately, I turned my attention to the terrible man before me and shook my head.

“You skipped out on your tab tonight,” I reminded him. “You promised to pay at least one hundred dollars every time you visited, and you didn’t. So, we’re here to collect.” Behind me, Richard closed the door, and I smiled when I saw the color run from Will’s face until he turned to look at Sandra, who was staring at him in shock and disbelief.

“What is he talking about?” she asked, her voice full of fear and concern as she spoke, and I knew she was more afraid of her safety rather than Will’s. Seeming to snap out of his initial shock, Will turned to stare her down.

“This doesn’t concern you,” he snapped, and I felt my anger flare up when I saw the way she flinched away from him, looking as though she was afraid of being hit. Her behavior confirmed the worst of my fears as well as Rebecca’s, and I was determined to put a stop to it before it was too late.

“That’s enough, Will,” I said as I took a protective step in front of the tiny, trembling woman. “Your concern should be us, not her.” A dark expression crossed his face, and he seemed to debate on whether or not to go after Sandra or myself once again. “Now, I want you to pay up in one way or another.” The look of fear quickly returned, and Will turned his attention back towards Sandra, who was still cowering behind me.

“Go get the money you hid from me,” he ordered, and she winced as I turned to look at her.

“I have no money,” she informed him, her lower lip trembling as she looked as though she might cry. “You took it all from my wallet along with my phone and everything else in my wallet.” Anger rose inside me as my inner Daddy reared his head back, demanding that we destroy the man before me.
