“Let me get this straight,” I began as I stared at him in annoyance. “Your girlfriend works the overnight shift at the bakery in order to help you with your financial troubles, and, not only do you seem to mistreat her, but you also steal from her?” When Will started to stutter, failing to respond, I nodded at Patrick and Richard, who immediately made their way over to him.

Patrick yanked his arms behind his back, almost as if he was arresting Will, while Richard patted him down, searching him for everything on his person. When they found nothing, as was expected since he was in his undershirt and boxers, they dropped him to the ground, and Patrick knelt on the space between his shoulder blades, holding him down while Richard returned to my side. Immediately, I turned to Sandra and gave her a reassuring smile.

“Where would he hide stuff from you?” I asked, keeping my voice calm and gentle for her sake. “Is there someplace he would keep things from you where you would never be able to find them?” She seemed to think for a moment before shaking her head.

“Unless he forgot to clear out his pockets before putting his clothes in the laundry bin, I wouldn’t know,” she admitted, sounding upset as she spoke. “Unless he has a hiding place on the couch, where he’s always sitting.” Looking at the musty looking fabric couch they owned, I winced and looked at Richard, who was already awaiting my instructions.

“You check the laundry, and I’ll check the couch,” I commanded, and Richard nodded as he made his way over to the laundry bin next to the washer and dryer by the kitchen counter.

As much as I didn’t want to touch the couch, I felt like I owed it to Sandra. If I had just done as Rebecca asked and looked after her, she wouldn’t still be with this piece of trash man who didn’t even deserve to exist. If this were Texas, and I hadn’t promised to go legit, I would have done more than make this man pay for mistreating her and stealing from her. Instead, I would have made him disappear and never come back. I was about finished searching the couch when Richard started towards us.

“The idiot forgot to clean out his pockets,” he informed me as he held up the small stack of items in his hand. “Looks like he stole her IDs and bank card, too.” Seeing the phone on the coffee table, I turned to look at Sandra.

“Is that yours?” I asked, and she started to answer, but Will cut her off immediately.

“It’s my phone!” he snapped, sounding indignant about the way she was being treated in comparison to him. “I paid for it, and it’s under my name. Therefore, it’s mine!” Seeing the look on her face, I realized this was one of the many ways he mistreated her and shook my head as I turned my attention back towards Will.

“You’ll be paying us back by tomorrow,” I informed him. “Your tab will be paid in full and closed off with your entire check, and you’ll never be allowed to come back to the bar again.” Looking at Sandra, I gave her a sad smile. “You don’t have to stay here, you know. My friends and I would love to give you a proper place to stay. Even Rebecca has a place where you could stay.” Handing her back her belongings, I saw the briefest look of interest on her face as she considered this.

“You know Rebecca?” she asked, and I nodded in response.

“Of course,” I agreed, appreciative of the fact that she no longer seemed terrified of me any longer. “Just come with us, and we’ll take you as far away from this man as possible.” Looking back at the man on the ground, she looked conflicted for the briefest moment before nodding her head in response.

“Yes, please,” she said as she started to smile at me. “I don’t want to be here any longer.”

CHAPTER THREE

Sandra

As foolish as it seemed to trust these men after they just tried shaking Will down for money he owed to the bar he seemed to visit everyday after work, I wasn’t dumb enough to stay with someone like Will. He had just been choking me because he thought I was sneaking around and cheating on him when he had just stolen money and ID from my wallet. I knew that, if I stayed, he wouldn’t be happy at the fact that he had been pinned down by the other man while they threatened to steal from him to make him repay his debt.

Normally, people would have been more cautious at the fact that these men were clearly part of a gang of some kind, but, when they mentioned Rebecca without me having to bring her up, I realized that these men must be friends of Rebecca’s. They looked a lot like Nathan and Russel, men who constantly visited the bakery when she and Megan were opening up first thing in the morning, and they already knew Rebecca. As long as they seemed to meet Rebecca’s approval, they were good enough for me.

When I finally agreed to go, the first man had the one other man lead me out to the car while they finished up with Will upstairs, and I felt my heart racing in my chest. As excited as I was to finally escape Will, I was still a bit wary of the man and his friends. For all I knew, they were making a deal with Will to have me pay off the debt for him in some way, shape, or form.

“Here,” the man said once we got to the car as he handed me a cell phone. “Do you know Rebecca’s number?” When I nodded in response, he continued. “I recommend calling her up to let her know that you might not be able to come to work tonight.” Frowning in confusion, I tilted my head to the side as I stared at him for a moment.

“Why’s that?” I asked, and the man smiled as he shook his head at me.

“Unless you want Will showing up and trying to bother you with no one around,” he reminded me, and I felt foolish as I lowered my gaze while he continued. “Tell her that Rafael is bringing you over to the compound to talk to Chase about getting out of your apartment and that you’ll explain everything when you see her in the morning.” Even more confused, I frowned at him.

“Does she live with you guys?” I asked, and he nodded.

“It’s complicated, but I’ll let Chase and Rebecca explain it all to you,” he informed me as he nodded to the phone. “Just give her a call and ask for the night off.” With that, he turned his attention back towards the apartment complex, and I stared down at the phone, shivering a little as I considered everything I had to do.

As he had suggested, I called Rebecca, and she answered on the third ring. After telling her what the man suggested I tell her word for word, I half expected her to yell at me to run and get as far away as I could, but she didn’t. Instead, she agreed that, given the circumstances, it was better that I get out of there as soon as possible, and she even gave me the entire weekend off as well, promising to speak to me in the morning about everything. By the time I disconnected the call, I felt much better about my situation, and the other two men were on their way out of the apartment complex and heading straight towards the car.

“We’re sorry we’re not letting you bring anything with you besides your personal belongings from your wallet,” said the first man, whom I assumed was Rafael, as he climbed into the driver seat. “As much as I hate to say it, nothing was really worth keeping. I know a few people who might be able to help you regarding getting some new clothing.” With that, he started up the car, and I found myself shaking my head in response.

“It’s no problem,” I told him, still embarrassed by the ratty clothing I was still wearing. “I didn’t think he would allow you anyways. He bought all of it worn out and preowned, and he can keep it all. I don’t want anything he ever gave me. He would do whatever it took to hold some kind of power over me.” As he nodded in response, he put the car in drive, and we were off towards what they referred to as the compound.

The whole ride to the compound, all I could think about was how scared I had been the entire time they were there and how guilty I had felt for misjudging them. Now that I was away from Will, I was finally able to think much clearer, and I knew that I was better off with these men than Will. For all I knew, if they hadn’t shown up when they did, I would have been dead within a few more minutes. My throat still throbbed from where Will had clutched it.

At this point, Will seemed like nothing more than a distant memory, and he should be treated as nothing but the distant memory he was. I was finally free, and I was on my way to a safer place than the apartment. It was just a matter of speaking to the man they called Chase.

The dark sky had completely taken over by the time we reached what they so affectionately called the compound. The night was cool and brightly lit by the full moon and the many stars, but it wasn’t enough to allow me to see everything outside. As we got out of the car, Rafael nodded towards the main house.

“Take her inside and straight to Chase,” he told them. “I need to deal with a few things in the auto repair shop. Tell Chase we’ll finish collecting the debts tomorrow.” Nodding in response, the two men turned, and the one who had allowed me to call Rebecca motioned for me to follow him.
