After a long, warm shower, I quickly got dressed and left the bedroom to head down to the kitchen, where Chase assured me that, unless something had a name on it, I was more than welcome to everything there. Reaching the kitchen, I started to look around the kitchen and found a giant plate of muffins on the countertop. At first, I planned to leave them alone, but, when I saw the note on the plate addressed to me, I grew exceptionally curious and picked up the note.

“Unless that’s your name on the note, I don’t recommend you mess the muffins,” said a familiar voice from behind me. Startled, I turned and saw the man from the night before standing behind me.

He was dressed in a regular black T-shirt, faded blue jeans that had been ripped at the knees, and he had traded his hiking boots for a pair of brown tennis shoes. As soon as he saw me, he took a step back, and I backed away as well, just as startled as he was. Immediately, he snapped out of his state of shock and caught me by the arm before I could back up any further.

“I’m so sorry,” he said as he pulled me away from the counter. “I didn’t recognize you. You just looked so…” I winced and gave him a gentle smile.

“Clean?” I asked, and he frowned as he stared at me for a moment before responding.

“I was going to say something different,” he reassured me, and I felt guilty for having been so quick to judge. “I was just surprised because you looked different.” Dropping my gaze to the floor, I shook my head in response.

“It’s alright,” I reassured him, still embarrassed by my statement. “I’m sorry for assuming what you were going to say.” Much to my surprise, he cupped my chin in his massive hand and lifted my head to look him in the eye.

“I forgive you,” he said as he studied my face for a moment before continuing. “In all honesty, you do look a bit better than you did yesterday. Assuming I was going to say you looked cleaner wasn’t too much of an assumption.” Letting go of me, he continued. “Rebecca asked me to make sure you got those muffins, so you’ll have to forgive me. I’ve already had to chase off several people this morning regardless of the name rule.” Smiling, I looked back at the muffins.

“So, those really are for me?” I asked, and he nodded as I reached for the plate.

“You bet,” he agreed. “Rebecca assumed that you would be exhausted and hungry, so she made these before leaving this morning and asked me to take you to the bakery when you’re ready so that she can talk to you about what you want to do about your job.” Confused, I tilted my head to the side.

“I didn’t lose my job, did I?” I asked, and he shook his head in response.

“Not that I heard of,” he reassured me. “I think she just wants to see if you want to adjust your hours or something.” Feeling a little better about all this, I nodded and took a muffin. Holding it out to him, I smiled.

“Take one,” I told him. “It’s the least I can do after everything you’ve done for me.” A smile spread across his face as he accepted the muffin I was holding out to him.

“Thank you,” he replied before nodding towards the back door. “Take what you want, and we can head out. Rebecca is still waiting for you.”

CHAPTER SIX

Rafael

All morning, I had been sitting in the kitchen, drinking coffee and scaring off anyone who was gutsy enough to try to steal muffins from the plate Rebecca had brought over for Sandra while she was still asleep. While I pretended I was doing it just because Rebecca said so, I was actually doing this for Sandra. Not only would I be saving her from her ex, but I was wanting to show her what a real man could do for her. I had my eyes on her for a while thanks to Rebecca, and I wanted to make her mine.

When she offered me the muffin, I saw that she truly was a sweet and kind person, and I couldn’t wait to get her alone. So, on our way over to the bakery, she sat in the front seat next to me, devouring the muffins as though she had never eaten in her life. It concerned me a little at first, but, the more I remembered that Will was a piece of trash who had preferred to binge on his own pleasures than actually make sure everything got paid and actively stole from his girlfriend, the more I realized this was likely more than she had eaten since getting with the man.

“I would slow down if I were you,” I suggested as I risked a glance over at her as we drove. “I don’t want you making yourself sick from eating sweets too quickly.” She winced as she set the half eaten muffin in her lap.

“Sorry,” she managed after finishing what was in her mouth. “I guess I was just more hungry than I realized.” Thinking back to the night before, I didn’t find this very surprising, especially when I remembered how she hadn’t eaten since before I showed up at her door the night before. Suddenly concerned, I raised an eyebrow.

“If you want, we could stop for a proper meal on our way back to the compound after you finish talking to Rebecca,” I offered as I drove, hoping that it wasn’t my fault that she had gone so long without eating. “That is if you’re still hungry when you’re done.” Seeming to consider this for a moment, she nodded in response and pulled out her wallet.

“That would be great,” she agreed, seeming eager to find something in the wallet. “It’ll be good to get to spend my own money on me for a change.” Confused by this statement she had made, I shook my head.

“Save it,” I instructed her. “It’s my treat.” Immediately, she seemed to grow cautious as she stared at me from the passenger seat.

“Are you sure?” she asked, sounding hesitant as she spoke. “I should be able to pay for myself if needed. It’s no problem at all.” Rather than arguing, I pulled into the parking lot of the baker and turned to smile at her.

“How about we talk about this after you figure out what Rebecca wants?” I offered, wanting to put her a little more at ease than she was already. The last thing I wanted was to make her uncomfortable and scare her off. “I’ll buy you lunch, and we can talk if you want.” She sighed as she considered this, and I knew that she was genuinely considering it.

“Alright,” she finally agreed as she started to unbuckle the seatbelt. When I didn’t move, she continued. “Are you coming in as well?” Realizing that she wanted me to come in with her, I nodded and unbuckled as well.

“Of course,” I agreed, not wanting to disappoint her. “I’ll come in and wait for you to talk to Rebecca. After that, we’ll go to lunch and get to know each other.” She sighed in relief as she nodded in response.

“I wish I didn’t have to,” she told me as she looked back towards the bakery. “I wanted to thank you properly for saving me from Will.” Before she could get out of the car, I caught her by the arm and shook my head.

“I hope you know you don’t have to worry about him ever again,” I reassured her. “I promise you that I’ll never let someone like that near you ever again.” At first, she stared at me for a moment, and I wondered if I had said something too obvious or out of the ordinary. After a moment, she smiled at me.

“I wish it could have been you I had met last year,” she informed me. “Maybe my life would have turned out a lot better.”
