Part of me wanted to pull her in for a hug and tell her to forget all about Rebecca, but the other part reminded me that she needed to stay at the bakery. If she got too involved with my work, things would go terribly for the two of us, especially if she learned what I had ordered for her ex. However, the more I thought about it, the harder it became to say no if I let her stay too close. No, in the end, it would be better to send her off to see Rebecca.
“Maybe,” I reassured her, hating that I was going to have to send her away in order to keep from angering Rebecca. “You should go inside. I don’t need Rebecca thinking I ran off with you or something like that.” Realizing that I was right, she started to climb out of the car, and I followed her out of the car. Reaching the front door, she winced and took a deep breath.
“Well, here goes nothing,” she told me with a gentle smile. “I hope Rebecca isn’t angry at me for taking so long.” Reaching out to her, I took her by the hand.
“If she is, I’ll take the fall,” I reassured her. “It wasn’t your fault. It was mine.” With that, we entered the bakery, and Rebecca smiled when she saw us.
“It’s about time,” she commented as she looked at the two of us standing hand in hand in the doorway. “I see why it took so long.” Turning her attention to me, she winked. “I’ll talk to you later about this. In the meantime, I think some coffee is waiting with your name on it.”
CHAPTER SEVEN
Sandra
Showing up at the bakery hand in hand with Rafael after everything that had happened the night before probably wasn’t the smartest thing, but, at the same time, it did give me more courage than I thought was even possible. I was afraid that Rebecca was going to tell me that she didn’t want me working at the bakery anymore. Whatever it was, she had been really kind to me all along, and I was afraid that it was all about to come to an end.
Much to my surprise, as soon as I sat down at the table, she asked me if I was okay. At first, I was a bit confused, but, the more I talked to her, the more I realized that she knew all about Will and was making sure he hadn’t hurt me. She even offered to have someone take care of him. Not wanting to trouble her, especially after how kind she had been to me all this time, I declined her offer, and we got down to business.
It turned out that she actually wanted to adjust my hours at work so that I wasn’t working the overnight shift any longer. She said that she didn’t want me to be at the bakery alone, especially at night now that Will knew that I had been working there. Touched by her concern, I eagerly agreed, more than willing to accept the extra hours so that I could earn extra money for myself. Even though Chase had offered me free housing so long as I stayed at the compound, I wanted to make sure I was able to get anything else I needed for myself.
Eventually, we agreed on a late morning to close shift, and I was finally working forty hours a week with the possibility of overtime and proper benefits, which was a huge relief, especially since I never had any insurance while with Will. Now that I was going to be properly cared for, I was deeply relieved and already feeling better about the direction my life was going. That meant that I could finally focus on everything that was going on between Rafael and I.
I had absolutely no idea what had possessed me to flirt with Rafael the way I had. It could have been the fact that I was grateful for the way he saved me from Will, or it could have been the way that I couldn’t help but squirm in order to keep the wetness from gathering in a single spot so that I didn’t look like I had almost wet myself. Either way, I couldn’t help myself, and I had made a complete fool of myself doing so.
I highly doubted anyone, especially Rebecca, would blame me for my attraction to Rafael. Between his rugged appearance and bulging muscles, he looked like every Little’s dream Daddy. Granted, I didn’t know if anyone here was a Little or Daddy, but I didn’t mind. So long as he showed he was interested in me, that was more than enough for me.
As soon as I was done discussing everything with Rebecca, she told me to return to the compound and take the rest of the weekend off so that I could adjust to my new life. I was grateful for the opportunity to have some time to myself, especially since that meant that I could see if Rafael was interested in me. Before long, I made my way back out to the car and saw Rafael standing there by the driver side door. Next to him were two more men I didn’t recognize, both identical in every way. As soon as they noticed me, Rafael turned and smiled at me.
“There you are,” he said, his voice oddly cheery despite the type of man he was. “Are you ready to go?” Nodding, I kept my eyes on both me, trying to get over the eerie feeling I felt regardless of everything.
They both looked about as tall and muscular as Rafael, but they looked more dangerous. Their gaze was cold and dark, and I was reminded of the tale of the two headed snake from mythology. Were they friends of Rafael? Or were they friends of Will who were sent to find me and bring me back to him?
“Is something wrong?” Rafael was asking, and I immediately forced a smile and shook my head, a force of habit from when I had to deal with Will.
“Not at all,” I reassured him, trying my best not to let my voice quiver despite how frightened I was. “I’m just exhausted. I didn’t really sleep last night.” A look of concern washed over Rafael’s face, and I found myself completely caught off guard as he spoke.
“I better get you back to the compound then,” he agreed before turning to look at the two men. “Are you both on your way as well? We can give you a ride.” Almost as if they could sense how uneasy I felt, both men shook their heads at the same time.
“Thanks,” said the first man, “but we still have a lot of work to do. We’ll see you when we get back to the compound.” Turning to look at me once again, they both nodded at me in acknowledgement. “It was a pleasure to meet you, Miss Sandra.” With that, they both climbed onto their motorcycle and rode off across the parking lot and down the street, leaving me alone with Rafael, who was still smiling politely at me.
“Ready to head back then?” he asked as he examined my facial expression as I stood there, still frozen in fear. “You don’t look so good.” Again, I forced a smile, which felt more weary than the first one, and nodded in agreement.
“Yes,” I answered automatically, trying not to sound too eager. “The sooner we get back to the compound, the sooner I can go back to bed. I’m exhausted.” Despite the look of skepticism on his face, he opened the car door and allowed me to climb in, and we rode in silence for most of the way back to the compound.
Thanks to my fear of the other two men, I had lost all my courage and wasn’t even able to bring up what I wanted to in the first place. What made things even worse was the fact that Rafael seemed to have noticed, and he was sitting in silence as well, seeming to be lost in thought, and I could feel the divide growing between us. After what felt like an eternity, he finally risked a glance at me.
“Alright, what’s the problem?” he finally asked, and I frowned as I looked over at him, my heart racing in my chest as I struggled to think of a proper excuse.
“What are you talking about?” I finally managed after a moment. “There’s nothing wrong. I’m just tired.” He raised an eyebrow at me as he shook his head at me in disbelief.
“Then why are you so quiet?” he demanded, seeming to grow more annoyed the longer the conversation dragged out. “Are you scared of my friends? Did something happen inside? What is it?” Realizing that there was no hiding it from a man like Rafael, I shook my head.
“Were they really your friends?” I asked, still a bit unsure if this was such a good idea. “Or were they looking for me?” He paused for a moment, and I became certain that I had made a terrible mistake.
“They are friends of mine,” he admitted, sounding a bit ashamed of what he was saying. “I asked them to help me look after you and make sure that Will never comes after you again.” Immediately, my jaw dropped, and I stared at him in shock and disbelief.
“Why would you do that?” I asked, blurting out the first question that came to my mind. Rather than looking offended, he shook his head calmly at me.
“Because I don’t think a man like that deserves you,” he informed me, “and I want him to stay out of my way so I can win you over.”
