CHAPTER ONE

Allison

"Another beer," called out Trenton from the other room, and I winced as I hurried to do as he said.

Honestly, I wished that he would disappear the same way Will had disappeared from Sandra's life about a month ago. He had always been a royal piece of trash who would mistreat me, but, as of recently, he was acting differently almost on edge as he went through his daily life. At first, I thought it was because of the new job he had gotten, but, ever since Will disappeared, I was starting to think that something else was going on.

Trenton had just turned twenty-one, and he was already a hardcore alcoholic with anger issues. I hated that he made me stay home and keep house, especially since I had just graduated high school and wanted to see the world. I wasn't even sure why I was with him in the first place, but now that I was it was hard to get away.

"Coming," I said as I reached into the fridge and pulled out a beer. Seeing that it was the last one, I cringed as I realized I was going to have to tell him the news. Carefully making my way over, I handed the beer to him.

"Thanks," he grumbled as he popped the top off the beer. I nodded in response and took a step back as he proceeded to chug about half the beer before turning his attention back to TV. "So, when's dinner going to be ready?" Forcing a smile, I nodded my head.

"It'll be ready soon," I reassured him. "However, we do have a slight problem with the beer." Raising an eyebrow at me, he turned to look at me.

"Well, what is it?" he asked. "Spit it out already." Taking a deep breath, I closed my eyes, bracing myself for how he might react.

"That's the last beer in the fridge," I told him. He didn't say anything at first, and I peeked in at him through half closed eyes, trying to take in his reaction.

Much to my surprise, rather than losing his temper like I expected, he just stared at the beer in his hand, as if he was trying to process everything I had just said. When he didn't respond right away, I opened my eyes completely and stared at him expectantly, trying to determine if he was just reacting slower than normal or if he was actually calm about the situation. After a moment, he turned to look at me.

"Why didn't you say we were running out of beer?" he asked, his voice dangerously calm as he spoke. "Don't you think that would have been nice to know before I started drinking the way I have been?" Despite the fact that this was the first beer I had brought him since he got home, I knew better than to argue with him.

'I'm sorry," I told him. "I didn't know." He sighed as he rose to his feet, towering before me as he turned his full attention towards me.

"You didn't know?" he asked, his voice becoming more of a growl as he spoke. "What did I tell you about that?" Realizing my mistake, I lowered my gaze.

"I didn't check before you got home," I corrected myself, trying to satiate his anger before it got out of hand. "If I had known, I would have told you." This seemed to be even more of a mistake, and I winced as he took a deep breath.

"What all did I tell you to do today?" he asked, his voice still as calm as ever. "I know I gave you a list of chores to do. Please remind me what was included." Reaching into my pocket, I produced the list of chores he had written down for me for the day.

"First, you wanted me to do the laundry since you're almost out of uniforms," I replied, reading off the list. "You also wanted me to vacuum the house and prepare your favorite food for dinner. After that, you wanted me to clean the bathroom and shop for groceries." A slight smile teased the corner of his mouth as he nodded his head in response.

"Exactly," he told me as he crossed his arms at me, "and as part of groceries, what else do you think I wanted?" I paused for a moment, trying to determine if he was serious before responding.

"Make sure you have beer?" I asked, and he shook his head.

"Buy beer," he corrected me. "You were supposed to buy beer." My heart sank as I realized he wasn't kidding and had forgotten all about the fact that I was eighteen.

"I can't buy beer, though," I reminded him, watching his tense body for any sign of him lashing out at me. "I'm not old enough to buy the beer." He didn't seem to care as he shook his head at me.

"Then why didn't you tell me?" he asked, his voice still as dangerous as before. Before I could think of what to say, there was a knock on the door, and he turned to look at the door. "Are you expecting anyone to show up?" Immediately, I shook my head in response.

"Of course not," I reassured him. "I know your rules… No company over unless you say so." He frowned as he made his way over to the door to check the peephole.

Almost instantly, his entire demeanor changed, and he backed away from the door quickly, looking panicked as he did. I had never seen him look so scared in his life, and I started to wonder who that could be at the door. Before I could say anything, he turned to look at me.

"You should answer the door," he told me as he made his way towards the hallway. "If they ask for me, tell him I'm not here." Before I could protest, he disappeared into the bedroom, leaving me alone with the insistent knocking on the door.

CHAPTER TWO

Richard

"You think he bailed on us?" Patrick asked as I knocked on the door, trying to get someone to respond. Having already seen the car in the parking lot, I immediately shook my head in response.

"I highly doubt it," I told him. "If anything, he's inside hiding from us." Patrick sighed as he shook his head at the bare door that stood before us.

"He better answer soon," he complained. "I don't know about you, but I've already missed a few meals today. The last thing I want is to miss dinner." Nodding in agreement, I looked down at my watch.
