CHAPTER THREE
Kellan
I held the bouquet of red roses in my hands as I headed up to Serena’s home, feeling a little nervous but I wanted to make her happy. I know I probably confused her when I walked out of the house, but the only thing that I could think of to make her happy was buying her some pretty flowers that she would love. I just wanted to see her smile once more, to forget about being upset for at least a moment.
“Serena, I’m back!” I called out as I opened the door, stepping through.
I shut the door behind me, glancing up as I heard Serena approach. The only problem was, the woman standing there was not Serena, but a much older woman who looked a lot like her. She was looking at me in equal confusion.
“Um, who are you?” She demanded, taking a step back as if I were a threat, “why are you just walking into my daughter’s home like you own the place?”
Oh, this must be Serena’s mother.
“Oh, hello, you must be Serena’s mother.” I murmured, smiling slightly at her, hoping to calm her down, “my name is Kellan, I am sure Serena has talked to you about me.”
Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion, looking skeptical, “no, she hasn’t.”
That was like a punch to the gut, not understanding why she was saying that because it couldn’t be true, “I have been dating Serena for a few months now. I don’t see why she wouldn’t have told you about me.”
Her eyes looked me over, and I was stunned when I saw the look of scorn on her face, “I can see why she wouldn’t want to. You look like you could be a male prostitute if you ask me. Is that your profession?”
“Excuse me?” I snapped, feeling my temper on the edge by what she was saying, “why would you ask your daughter’s boyfriend something like that?”
She crossed her arms over her chest, as if she were better than anyone else, “she obviously didn’t tell me about you because she was no doubt embarrassed by you. I can already see that you’re no where near up to standard like her ex is. It still disappoints me that she broke up with him. If only he hadn’t gotten married, they would’ve made beautiful babies.”
It’s Serena’s mother, I thought to myself, trying to calm myself down. No matter what she says, be nice.
“I’m sorry you feel that way,” I apologized half-heartedly, wishing Serena would show up, “but I make your daughter happy, not her ex. That’s why he is an ex for a reason, ma’am.”
“That’s okay.” She disagreed, motioning for me to leave, “I have a few blind dates set up for my baby girl so I’ll make sure she meets someone of high quality. It would be best if you didn’t see her anymore.”
“You’re a horrible person.” I told her, feeling a little flabbergasted, “you have such disrespect towards people, and it doesn’t surprise me that Serena has not told me a damn thing about you. It’s obvious she’s ashamed of you because of how terribly you treat people. I can only imagine how you treat her.”
“How dare you speak to me that way?” She yelled, charging at me, “get out of here before I call the police.”
I braced myself, really thinking that she was going to hit me, when a sweet voice came from the doorway, “mom, what are you doing?”
Seeing her mother freeze, I side-stepped her, secreting giving her a smug look as I walked past her. I could practically feel her glaring daggers into my back, but I had yet to give a shit. Serena looked really confused as she looked between me and her mother, but her eyes lit up as I handed her the flowers.
“For you.” I told her softly, kissing her softly on the temple.
“They are beautiful.” She murmured, sniffing them, “is this why you left early?”
“Yes, I’m sorry if I worried you.” I responded, not caring that her mom was watching us as I wrapped my arms around her, “I just thought that flowers would make you feel even a little bit better.”
“They do.” She agreed, glancing over at her mom, “mom, why were you charging at Kellan? It doesn’t seem like you.”
Her mother straightened her spine slightly, and it didn’t surprise me the crap that spewed past her lips, “I’m sorry, honey, you just never mentioned having a boyfriend, so it scared me when I saw him coming through the door. Your mother is getting old, baby, and can’t fight off men like she used to. What if he came in here to hurt us?”
What a sad excuse of a woman…
Serena rolled her eyes slightly, as if she too were annoyed with her mother, “mom, do you really think some guy would just walk into my apartment? He has a key.”
I could see her face flushing slightly in embarrassment, “oh. I didn’t know that, I thought you had accidentally left the door unlocked.”
Feeling a little irritated by how fake she was acting, I held out my hand to her, smiling, “well, now since there are no misunderstandings, ma’am, my name is Kellan.”
She looked like she wanted to smack me, but restrained herself and shook my hand, “you can call me Rosalie… I think it is about time I leave now.”
