I think it might be the first time I watch this film and don’t pay attention to it. Sure, I pretty much know it by heart but still, it’s just so strange to sit here watching it with her. She can choose anything she likes but chooses this one.
“That was a good movie, Daddy,” she says. I realize the credits are over. I look at her and she asks, “What’s wrong?”
“Why did you pick that movie?”
She looks at me like I’m crazy. “I just told you, Daddy. I picked it because you like it and I wanted to watch something you like.”
“But…”
“Did you want me to be selfish?” she asks.
“No, little girl,” I say.
She doesn’t speak for a moment and then says, “Let me clean this up.” She grabs the empty bottles and the popcorn bowl and when she comes back she says, “Please tell me what’s wrong.”
I look at her and sigh. “I just feel like maybe… Did submitting your college classes to me help you?”
She nods. “You already know it did, Daddy. I’m submitting all my college to you until I get my degree.”
“Why don’t you want to submit anything else?”
She looks at me like I just asked the craziest question in the world. “What else do I need to submit?”
I shrug and say, “I don’t know. What do you need help with?”
“Like college?” she asks, and I nod. “Nothing. I mean, they just gave me another raise at work because it’s going well. I’m eating healthier than ever. My workouts are all going well. I… do you think there’s something I need to change, or I need help with?”
I don’t even have to think about it. “No. You’re doing everything well.”
“Do you just need to do something dominant?” she asks.
I chuckle. “I guess I do. I guess that’s what this is all about.”
She smiles. “No problem.”
