“She will be angry with you for a while for not noticing me,” Belak said from behind me.

I nodded and heard another snort from inside the bathroom. Arena was both angry and afraid. It was a concerning combination. Humans did not act rationally when angry and afraid.

“Come,” I said to Belak. “We can heat some food for her so it is ready when she is.”

I led him to the kitchen with the supplies he’d brought up. As I got out a pot, I considered the reason behind Arena’s fear.

“When I first found her, she asked what I wanted,” I said to him. “I told her females, so she would understand I meant her no harm. She responded that she was not a human trafficker.”

“Ah,” Belak said. “I’m surprised she was willing so quickly if she was mistreated by other humans. You will need to take extra care with her. Let her come to you.”

“I have, but I worry about the other females with her. Are they safe? Are they being abused by human males while I wait for Arena to trust me enough to tell me where to find them?”

“Work harder to gain her trust,” Belak said, watching me open cans. “Too few humans have survived. We need every female.”

I nodded as I started heating the soup for Arena.

“Did Eljek’s female forgive him?”

“No. She started talking to Vukeso.”

“That is good for Vukeso. Bad for Eljek.”

Belak grunted in agreement.

“Vukeso is keeping her away from the cow pen when he spends time with her. And now we all know females do not want help removing dirt from their faces.” Belak sighed. “Why are there so many rules? Do not show our desperation. Do not ask to see or taste their pussy. Complement them, but not their soft bellies. Feed them, but not dog food or cat food. They want chocolate. Chocolate, Nav. It is the worst-tasting food.”

I chuckled. “To us. Not to them.”

“I know. Learn a female’s mind and heart; then she will open her sweet pussy,” he said, quoting a rule we all tried to follow.

It wasn’t easy to learn a female’s mind, though. It changed often. Even once we learned their minds, winning their hearts was even harder. They were focused on survival, immunity, and rebuilding the world they had lost, not on finding a male to have babies.

What did it mean that Arena had allowed me to taste her but I did not yet know her mind or her heart? Was she planning to leave me? Use me for supplies? For immunity?

I needed to win her heart to keep her by my side.

“You’re unhappy,” Belak said.

“I do not yet know Arena’s mind. She will not talk about her past, her family, or the future. Do you think she plans to leave?”

Belak grunted, acknowledging my concern and the impossibility of knowing for certain. Only Arena knew that. And until she chose to confide in me, I would need to keep trying to win her trust to learn her mind.

Down the hall, I heard the bathroom door open. Her footsteps were light as she approached. Belak angled away from the doorway, not wanting to frighten her.

“They don’t like it when we prepare their food with our cocks out,” he reminded me softly.

I glanced down at myself and growled in annoyance. How could I have forgotten?

“He’s right,” Arena said. “I’d rather you wear some pants when you cook and when we have company.”

I grinned at the stove, liking that she was speaking to me and that she wanted to keep the view of my cock to herself. Belak elbowed me and took the spoon.

Turning, I faced my sweet female. The shirt she wore came to the top of her thighs. I stared at what I knew it was hiding, mouth watering for another taste.

She snapped her fingers low, and I quickly looked up.

Her expression was filled with uncertainty and fear as her gaze shifted between us.
