“Something’s not right with that guy,” I said. “This was about more than the club. He’s got an agenda, and I don’t think it’s just about bringing them down.”
Jude turned to me and nodded. “You’re right. I’ll do some digging, and I’ll let Glacier know to get Zero on it.”
“You really do work together?” I asked, surprised. “I thought you’d hate each other.”
Zeke grinned as he tidied up the jack and spare they’d pulled from the truck. “You shouldn’t believe everything you see and hear around town. We do what we have to and work with who we need to so we can keep this town clean and safe.”
He glanced around before returning his gaze to me. “It’s our home. The only real home we’ve ever had. Ask Glacier to explain it to you.”
His grin faded, and his expression turned serious. “But Glacier does have a problem. Which means we do too. Someone’s leaking information to the Feds. We know it’s a woman; we just don’t know who.”
He exhaled, shaking his head slightly. “This could’ve been a complete clusterfuck if we hadn’t bugged Agent Reynolds’ phone.”
My eyes widened. “You did what?”
Jude shrugged. “Like Zeke said, we do what we have to so we can keep our people safe, even if that means bugging a federal agent’s phone.”
I fell silent as I processed everything they’d told me. A woman was leaking information to the Feds? It could only be one of the club Tarts. I dismissed Rita immediately. She would never turn on the club. It was her home. That left three suspects.
Rita was in charge of the girls. I was an Ol’ Lady, which made this our problem.
I pulled out my phone and fired off a message.
Me: Got a problem. One of the Tarts dobbed me into the Feds.
Rita: On it. You okay?
Me: Fucking pissed. I’ll be home in an hour. Have them assembled. Have Harriet come in to help.
Rita: Leave it with me.
I slipped my phone back into my pocket.
“Everything okay?” Jude asked.
“It will be,” I said grimly, “as soon as I take out the trash.”
“Uh-huh.” He gave me an assessing look. “Make sure you run it by Glacier first. We have ways of making sure things go the way they need to.”
“Will do.” I held out my hand. “I appreciate your help. I know you own a ranch. Twenty percent off your next feed order.”
Jude grinned. “We don’t take bribes.”
I shrugged. “Not a bribe. It’s business.”
He considered it, then nodded. “All right, then. We’ll follow you to the club turnoff; make sure nobody bothers you.”
“Appreciate it.” I climbed into the cab, started the truck, checked my mirrors, and pulled back onto the road.
When I reached the clubhouse turnoff, I gave a quick honk and stuck my arm out the window, waving my thanks. The gates opened as I drove up, and I nodded a thanks to Woe.
Once I found a spot, I switched off the truck and pulled out my phone, sending a quick message to Glacier and Fin to let them know I was home safe and sound.
Rita: Got them in the common room. Missing one.
My lips tightened as I read the message. I stretched my neck, trying to ease the tension that had built up over the last hour, then took a slow, steady breath.
I opened the door and stepped down from the truck. Crossing to the clubhouse, I threw the doors wide and stomped into the common room.
