He kissed the top of my head as he pulled me against him. His heavy breaths lifted his chest that I sprawled across.
“I didn’t hurt you, did I?” he asked quietly.
I dragged my fingers across his bicep. “No. Not at all. I loved feeling your power. It was hot.”
With a sigh, he kissed me again. “I’ll give it to you as hard or as gentle as you want.”
“I like both,” I admitted, then peered up at him with a smile.
He matched my grin and lifted his eyebrows. “Well, that’s happy news to me. You just tell me what you’re in the mood for, and I’m at your service. Is there anything else you like?”
“I don’t know.” I settled against him. “I’ve never experienced anything like this with anyone, and honestly, I’ve spent so much of the past few years just trying to stay alive that I don’t even know what I like in the world, much less in bed. I guess we’ll have to figure it all out together.”
“I like that.” His happy sigh filled the room. “Together. I want to be right at your side while you figure out all the things you love.”
You. I wanted to say but stopped myself again.
“I was just thinking about this the other day. I don’t have any hobbies or passions in life. When you’re in a situation like mine, you don’t have the energy or the desire to do anything other than get through the day. It sounds so cliché, but it’s the truth. Every second is a struggle, and there’s just nothing left for anything else. I hate that I’ve become this shell of a person... this victim. I used to be so fun and full of life and dreams. Victor stole that part of me, but I want to find her again. I’m really excited to try new things and find out who I am outside of the woman running from a monster.”
“We can try all sorts of stuff together. I can teach you to shoot, fish, drive a motorcycle...”
I crinkled my nose. “Those all sound like things you’re passionate about. And I’m not driving a motorcycle.”
“Don’t knock it ‘til you try it, baby. You’re going to try everything, and we’re gonna find all the things that make you happy and do them over and over again.”
“Horseback riding, maybe? I’ve always wanted to do that.”
His chest rumbled with his chuckle. “I’m gonna need a big ass horse if we’re going horseback riding. But yeah. I’m game. Maybe I can get some of those badass leather cowboy chaps.”
I started to laugh but then pursed my lips as the vision of Knox in chaps entered my mind. “You know, I think you in chaps is a very good idea.” I glanced up. “Chaps and nothing else.”
Knox’s laugh shook his body, and I laughed with him. “Deal, Baby. But you need to wear some too. Chaps and nothing else.”
Heat pooled between my legs as I started thinking about it. “Deal.”
Just as I was about to climb back on top of him and put out the fire he’d started once again, his phone beeped a strange sound. Knox shot up to sitting, nearly knocking me off the bed. He grabbed it and pushed some buttons before letting out a deep sigh.
“Shit. That was the perimeter alarm. But it’s just Marcus and Piper coming up the drive.”
“They’re here?” I yanked the covers up over my body, suddenly feeling exposed. “Already?”
“Damn. I really lost track of time. You bewitched me, woman,” he teased, leaning over to give me a kiss. “We should get dressed and meet them downstairs.”
Suddenly, I felt fearful again. It’d just been Knox and me alone since we’d met, and now two strangers were coming into our lives.
Two killers, actually.
But I reminded myself that they weren’t the kind of killers Victor and his goons were. These people may have a long list of dead bodies in their wake, but they only took out the bad people... the Victors of the world. They were here for Luca and me, and Knox trusted them with his life. That meant I should trust them too.
I hurried and dressed, smoothing my matted sex hair as best I could. Knox came out of the bathroom in a pair of jeans and a white tank top that had him looking so good I wanted to drag him back to bed.
“Don’t be nervous,” he said, noting the unease that must have been showing on my face. “They’re the best people on the planet. My family. And you’re part of my family now, so they’ll protect you with their lives.”
His words soothed me, and I nodded and stepped to his side. He slid a protective arm around my shoulder and guided me down the stairs.
“Where you at Knox?” a man’s deep voice called.
“Coming,” he called back.
