“I love you, Lucia,” he whispered, and I froze in his arms.
“What?” I breathed.
“I love you. I love you now, and I’ll love you until the day I die. You’re everything to me. Everything.”
I lifted my gaze to meet his. The moon illuminated his face, and I saw the truth in his eyes. A truth I recognized because it was my truth too.
“I love you too, Knox.”
His face nearly split from the size of his grin, then he leaned down and kissed me so hard it would have hurt if it didn’t feel so good.
“I’m gonna make you so happy, Lucia. I promise. I’ll never hurt you.”
“I know,” I whispered, then rose up to kiss him again.
Our love for each other burned hot as he yanked off my clothes, taking me again on the cool, dewy grass. He switched between tender and rough, moving slowly and gently inside me, then pinning my legs to my chest and pounding inside me so hard I struggled to get out a breath. I loved every second of our vigorous expression of love and the way he seemed to know exactly what I wanted without a word. My body responded to every one of his demands as our connection deepened with every touch, every kiss, every moan.
“I fucking love you,” he ground out as he thrust inside me one last time, his body tightening with his release.
I quivered and quaked as my orgasm built to an almost unbearable sensation. I wrapped my legs around his waist and clung to him while I fell over the edge. I held him tight as the last of the waves washed over me. When we finished, I lay panting in his arms.
“You’d better come back to me, Knox. I want more of that every single day.”
“Woman, nothing in the world is keeping me from your arms. Nothing.”
“Good. Don’t you go dying tomorrow.”
“I won’t.”
“Good.”
“Although...” he drifted off.
“Although what?” I furrowed my brow, rolling over to look at him.
“Just in case, even though there’s no chance, but just in case...”
“Just in case what?”
“I had Wes access my will and redo it. I left everything to you.”
“You what?” I sat up straight.
Knox sat up with me. “I’m not planning on dying, but knowing the risks with our jobs, it’s always imperative we have wills set in place. Which is funny because a big reason we get recruited is that we have no family. No ties. No connections. We all come from broken homes, so we don’t have anyone at home to look for us or worry about us. No one can be taken and used as leverage against us. Essentially, no one to leave shit to. So, until now, we always just had our wills sending money to our teammates.”
“You promised you were coming back. If you believe that, then why are you updating your will?”
“Because I could fall and hit my head and drown in the pool tonight. I could slip on a pasta noodle you dropped in the kitchen. Death comes for us all eventually, even stubborn bullet-proof warriors like me. I just wanted to make sure that if something happened to me, everything I’ve earned goes to someone who deserves it. Finally, for the first time in my life, I have someone I love to care for. And it felt good to finally fill out a name on that will for a woman I love.”
“I don’t even know what to say.”
“Just say you love me again. Maybe a few more times until I believe it.”
I reached forward, brushing my hand across his chin. “I love you, Knox. Always.”
“Again,” he whispered, pulling my lips against his.
“I love you.”
