“Again.”
I said it over and over, kissing him until he rolled on top of me and showed me just how much he loved me too.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Knox
––––––––
The soft wind blew the branches of the tree I perched in just outside the compound. “Testing, testing,” I whispered, checking to make sure my throat mic picked up my sound.
“Loud and clear,” Wes answered.
“Testing, testing,” Marcus’s voice said into my earpiece.
“Loud and clear,” I responded.
“Testing, testing,” Piper whispered.
“Loud and clear,” Marcus answered.
“Good. All mics are a go,” Wes said. “Everyone has their plan?”
“Roger that,” I responded, going over the details one last time.
“In position,” Piper said.
The full moon lit the landscape surrounding Victor’s compound. From our research, it had been in his family for years, a vineyard that continued producing wine he sold and used to move his drugs. Now that he’d had to flee the States, he’d moved here last year and made it his base of operations. And in doing so, he’d built up a sizeable defense to surround it. Mafia wars were serious business in Sicily, and Victor wasn’t dumb. He knew the local organizations wouldn’t take nicely to competition moving in. The armed guards and security surrounding this place were top-notch.
Not enough to keep us out, but good enough to keep most mafia losers at bay.
“Victor is still with his guys in the East Wing.”
“We wait until he goes to his room,” Marcus said. “Our best shot at taking him out quickly and quietly.”
I practically vibrated inside my skin, the charged energy building inside me ready to unleash itself on the man who’d hurt the woman I loved.
We sat silently on the perimeter for nearly two hours while Wes reported on Victor’s movements. Finally, he said the words we’d been waiting to hear.
“He’s in his room alone getting ready for bed.”
“We move,” Marcus commanded.
The warrior I carried within pounded his chest, snarling and frothing for the chance to be free again. And I couldn’t wait to unlock the cage and let him have his fun.
“Piper, there is movement outside the room you’re in. Hold steady,” Wes said.
“Roger that,” she whispered back.
Marcus and I didn’t waste any time, quickly scaling the wall and taking out the two guards nearest our position. We tossed their bodies into the bushes, glancing around quickly to make sure no other threats were near.
“Clear,” Marcus said, and I followed along behind him through the courtyard, keeping to the shadows as we worked our way to the villa.
When we got to the second-story window Piper had unlocked for us, I hoisted Marcus up. He slid inside, spinning around quick to pull me up after him. My boots thudded on the tile floor as I landed, then we crouched down together, listening and looking for anyone nearby.
“You’re both clear,” Wes said. “Piper. Hold steady. The guards are still hanging around the hall by you just shooting the shit.”
She grumbled under her breath but didn’t respond.
