“Really.” I pulled her against me. “I love you, Lucia. And I want to give Luca more brothers and sisters.”

“I do too,” she answered, her eyes sparkling a little more as the words tumbled from her lips.

“Oh, wait.” I sucked the air through my teeth. “I totally forgot. We’re not married yet. I guess we should hold off, huh?”

Her face fell, but she quickly straightened it back up. “Oh, yeah. Definitely. Someday. No rush.”

I struggled to suppress my smile as I slipped an arm around her shoulder. “Yeah. Someday. Let’s check out the master bedroom, huh?”

She nodded and let me guide her down the hall. When we reached our bedroom, she pushed open the door and gasped. The words “Will you marry me?” were spelled out in rose petals across the bed.

“Yes!” she screamed and spun around to see me down on my knee. “Yes, yes, yes!”

When she leaped into my arms, I wrapped her up tight. She covered my face with kisses as tears streamed down her face.

“I love you, Lucia. I can’t wait to make you my wife.”

“You’re getting married?” Luca’s voice startled us, and I spun to see him standing in the hall.

Lucia and I exchanged a glance as I slid her back down to the floor.

“Well, I was gonna talk to you about that, little man. Are you okay with me and your mom getting married?”

His lip quivered as his eyes glistened.

My heart clenched in my chest, realizing I’d made him cry. Maybe I should have sat him down and talked to him about it first. Clearly, he wasn’t ready for us to take this step.

“It’s okay if you’re not ready, buddy. Your mom and I are in no rush. All that matters is you know we both love you more than anything.”

A big crocodile tear slipped down his face. “Does this... does this mean you’ll be my dad?”

I slid a sideways look to Lucia, then kneeled down in front of him. “Do you want me to be your dad?”

The one crocodile tear turned to two as he nodded his head. Then three, then four. “Yeah. I really want you to be my dad. Do you want to be my dad, too?”

My heart swelled to bursting as I reached out and wiped the tears from his cheek. “There’s nothing more I want in this world than to be your dad.”

Luca jumped forward and landed in my arms. I wrapped him up tight and held him close while he cried.

“So, is that a yes to me marrying your mom?” I asked as I smiled and stroked his head.

He nodded against my neck.

“Good. Because I want to be in your family forever.”

“I want you to be with us forever too... Dad.”

I clung to him tighter and turned around to face Lucia. Tears streamed down her face as she pressed her hand to her mouth.

“Then why don’t you hand this to your mom, and let’s make it official.” I placed the diamond ring in his hand.

He lifted his head from my shoulder and spun it around in his fingers. “Wow,” he breathed.

“Go ahead. Give it to her. Just slide it on her left ring finger.”

I leaned down so he could reach easily, and he slipped the ring on her finger. Lucia looked down at the ring and then lifted her arms, wrapping them around us both.

My family. My loves. The two things that made my heart beat. And now they were mine forever.
