He’d bet daddy gave him new responsibility but the deal was to keep his nose clean. “About the time Tommy Larson was arrested for drugs. He worked for you then.”

“Hey, I don’t like your tone.”

“You aren’t that stupid. But I’m getting the feeling you really don’t know what’s going on here.”

“Get out.” She shook.

Trey didn’t know if it was from anger, or she had realized deep down that he was right.

“If you see your brother, I’d like to talk to him.”

He left. No time to waste. Worry gnawed a hole in his gut as he sat in the vehicle. Amy was in trouble and he knew it. He didn’t want to put an APB out on Peterson. He’d hear it. Trey didn’t want the man running or God forbid, hurting Amy.

He punched in Jim’s number. His knee jiggled as the phone rang. “Pick up.”

“Trey, did you find her?”

“No, but Pauline Gardiner said she was here and left.” He scanned the parking lot. “I got a bad feeling.”

“Peterson’s gone dark. Not answering his phone.” Jim said.

“I think he has her. Or Gardiner does. His sister said he got a call and left, but his car’s in the lot.”

“I got some feelers out. She’ll show up.”

But will it be too late? He walked through the scene. Tire tracks from where Amy’s car slid in and second tracks next to it.

“He has her. And I bet the call Stephen got was from Peterson. He must have taken her car. But where?”

“Hang on. Ryan’s calling.” Jim clicked over.

Trey slammed down to steady his knee.

“Where would I take her?” His mind ran through the different options. If she knew, and she did, he would want to silence her fast, take her someplace private and secluded in the city. But Peterson would not only need to quiet her but make it look like she was the dirty cop. That’s the only way he could hope to clear his name.

Trey’s fingers tapped on the steering wheel. It hit him. Time ticked by. He couldn’t be wrong. Not with Amy’s life on the line.

He cranked the key and pulled out as Jim clicked back.

“Bob took a patrol car. We're tracking him now.”

“Good. I got an idea. I’m heading there now.” He prayed he wasn’t too late.

Chapter 23

Amy blinked as the sun cut through the tree branches on the long road she knew well. The iron arch over the entrance had always seemed peaceful to her, but today it was straight out of a Stephen King movie. Probably because she knew what waited for her on the other side.

Bob stopped the car next to her father’s headstone.

He opened the door and motioned her out with the butt of the gun.

″I don’t know how you think this will end, but you won’t get away with it.” She couldn’t bring herself to say the word. It wasn’t a strong word but the M word made her legs shake.

″You underestimate me. Everyone does.” Bob stepped back and pointed to the headstone. “Your dad thought he was smart enough to play me, but I knew he was a rat. He didn’t have the right motivation.”

″Like you did.” Not that she wanted to argue that her dad could be as corrupt as the next guy. It was BS and everyone that knew him saw the loyalty in the man. Even Bob. If asked, she would have said no way he’d be dirty. The man’s life’s ambition was to make Captain.

But life throws you a curve ball sometimes.
