″You wouldn’t understand. Yeah, you’d do anything for your brother, but would you really?” The pistol waved as he spoke. The more worked up he got, the larger the swings. “But a parent’s love is stronger than anything else.”
″Does your wife know?”
His face blanked. “She’s not cut out for this. Now sit.”
She got down on her knees. “So, she wouldn’t approve.”
″I didn’t say that.”
He didn’t have to. Amy had met his wife more than once. No way she’d approve of him killing people for money. Even if it was for their daughter.
″It doesn’t matter anyway. They’ll find my car and put it together.”
″Will they?” His evil smirk slapped her back.
She’d never seen Bob like this. Drunk on the power he held over her.
Fear trickled down her back with each drip of sweat. She couldn’t even think of a silly affirmation for this situation. The only thing that came to mind was, God, please let someone find me. Alive.
She’d take any help right now, a cop, a stray dog… Hell, Stinky. Any distraction would help because she couldn’t see a way to get out of these cuffs while staring down the barrel of a gun.
He threw a bottle of pills at her.
She caught them. “What are these?”
″You couldn’t take it anymore. The corruption, the lies. You decided to end it.”
She snorted. “You think this will work? No note, no evidence?”
″But there will be, on your computer.”
Her brows narrowed.
He snickered. “Your old laptop will show up at a pawn shop. Imagine the surprise when they find a suicide note and correspondence with Lindstrom and Sampson. All on an anonymous email account.”
″You trashed my car?” Anger gripped her. She fought the shaking. Her hands fisted.
The roar of an engine touched her ears. She held her breath. Please let it be Trey. Not likely, but she really didn’t care. Any distraction and she would make her move.
Bob put another foot between them. “Sit down. Now.”
Her butt dropped to the damp ground. She muttered a prayer. Her heart stopped as the car pulled up next to them and the motor turned off. It was her car. Stephen Gardiner slid from the seat like the snake he was. He pocketed the keys and strolled over to her.
Her chest sank. God, when I asked for someone to find me, I didn’t mean him.
She seethed at the sight of him.
″Not so big and tough now, Officer Larson.” He leaned in with a nasty smirk.
She spit in his face.
His hand lashed out so fast Amy hadn’t seen it coming. Her head jerked back and the sting of his slap spread over her cheek.
″I should have killed your whole family.”
″You were always a monster.”
″And you were a self-righteous little bitch.” He raised his hand, but Bob caught it this time.
