″Don’t rough her up. It needs to look like she took her own life.”
″I don’t care about that. I want her to suffer like I did.”
She snorted. “You suffered? Hah.”
″My father was a good businessman, but he was soft. I took care of your nosy father but did I get thanks? No. He treated me like a petulant child instead.”
Lightning fast, his fist hit her injured shoulder.
Agony shot down her arm. A scream tore from her lips. She slumped in pain.
A deafening crack jerked her up. Stephen crumbled to the ground. Bob stood with his gun aimed at Stephen.
Shock slapped her back from the pain. Blood seeped from Stephen’s body. His eyes stared, unseeing. Her gaze crawled back to Bob.
″You just messed up your whole plan.”
″Not really. Instead of the pills, I’ll say you shot him. Then I’ll shoot you with his gun.” He pulled a pistol from Stephen’s waistband. Her gun.
″It’s not that easy.” She scooted back. “You know the BCA will figure it out. Trey wouldn’t believe it.”
He smirked. “Your boyfriend was pretty surprised to learn your daddy was under investigation for corruption. It’s amazing what a tiny kernel of doubt can do to a relationship.”
Shit, he did this. She was on her own and it wasn’t looking good.
She watched him take her gun and shoot a round in Stephen’s direction but not into the body. He was setting the scene. A chill coated her as she watched her friend plan a cover-up and her murder.
The squeal of tires in the distance pulled their attention.
Move. Move. Move. She kicked a leg out and Bob wobbled. In a move her sensei would applaud, she bounced up on her feet and looped her cuffed hands around Peterson’s neck.
He dropped the gun.
Before he could reach for his holstered weapon, she wrapped her legs around his waist and with all her muscle, she pulled him to the ground.
Her shoulder screamed in pain but she couldn’t listen. If she lived, she’d drink a bottle of Jack and soak in a hot bubble bath until the water chilled but now was the time to fight.
The car slammed on the brakes and the door flung open.
″Police. Stop.”
Bob raised his hands. “Thank God, you’re here. She’s the one. Larson killed Gardiner and is trying to kill me.”
″The lying sack of shit.” She head butted him.
Her whole head ached, even her hair hurt. But it was worth it.
″Amy, let him go.” Trey didn’t drop his weapon. He had the cop-face.
Shit, she released Peterson and rolled to the side. Her whole body ached and she couldn’t stand if she wanted to.
″Thank you—hey.”
Trey spun Peterson around, cuffed him while he read him his rights, and shoved him in the back of the squad. He pulled out his phone and called for backup and a bus.
She watched with awe as he knelt beside her. He gently cupped her face. “Are you alright? I have the ambulance coming.”
″How did you know?”
