Amy stepped between them. “No, really. I have been watching that restaurant for drug activity for a while. I asked Trey to come with me.”

Nice cover. That rolled off her tongue a little too easily. He’d have to remember that in the future.

Brie studied Amy’s face for a minute then her fists relaxed.

“Oh.” She turned to Trey. “Sorry, but you’re still a doofus.”

“Can you give us a minute?” Trey gestured to the door behind her.

“Oh, sure. Sorry.”

He watched Brie’s auburn hair swing as she left. He noticed he wasn’t the only one watching her. Tommy was too, but his eyes focused a little lower.

Trey cleared his throat.

The younger man snapped his gaze back to him. “What were you saying?”

“The file was washed. Amy, can you get me the original of that file?”

“Sure, but it won’t do you any good. I made the copies from the original myself.” She checked her watch. “Listen, I need to get back to work. I’ll tell Ryan to ask for a security detail for Adam when he is released on bail.”

“Sounds good. Not sure if the brass will see the need.”

“Ryan can be very persuasive.”

He didn’t know Daniels well, but he didn’t like the sound of that. Even if Amy and the detective were just friends. “We can talk about this tonight.”

“Shoot, I forgot. Girls' night. My friend from the academy is in town. Lorna’s back, and we are all going to book club.”

His brows dropped. “What book?”

“I don’t know, but there will be margaritas.” She winked and sashayed out of the office.

“I’m sure it’s at a male strip club.” Tommy said.

Trey wasn’t sure if that would be a good thing or bad. He’d find out if she knocked on his door in the middle of the night.

Chapter 17

Amy did a final check in the mirror. She fluffed her hair, checked out her lip gloss, and shoved the latest best seller into her bag, not that she’d need it.

Her phone rang, Candi’s face flashed on her screen. She answered. “I’ll be right down.”

“I’m running late. I’ll meet you at the restaurant. What was the name of it?”

“Fire Hearth.”

“Sounds good. See you in twenty.” She hung up.

Amy walked out and was locking the door when a whistle caught her attention.

“Looking good. I like the sexy librarian look on you.” Trey leaned against the doorframe of his apartment—hands shoved in his jeans’ pockets.

Mmm, he wasn’t so bad himself. She curtsied. “Did you need anything?”

“Nope, I wanted to lay my eyes on you one more time tonight.” Those sexy steel eyes softened as they canvassed her body from the top of her head to her purple-tipped toes. “Okay, I’m good.”

She laughed. “If you play your cards right, maybe I’ll bring you some dessert.”
