It was Evan.
“Thanks to you, asshat! I’ll be right there. Can you grab my bag?”
“Already done. Coach is waiting on you.”
“Fuck!”
“Exactly.”
I was gonna get so much shit.
I found a notepad and wrote a quick note to Zach. I’d text him as soon as I could too. I didn’t want things to be awkward between us. I hoped they wouldn’t be anyway.
The chorus of catcalls and whistles that greeted me on the bus made me blush. All Coach said was ‘I hope you wrapped it up, son.’
Ew. I was not about to have any babies any time soon. My babies had gone all over…a towel? The bedspread? I couldn’t remember.
Evan had saved me a seat in the back row. It was just the two of us, with three rows of equipment in front of us to give us privacy. Part of the privileges of being the team’s captains.
“Where’d you go?” he asked.
“I was with Zach. We got drunk.”
“Oh, soooo, no chick?”
I laughed and shook my head.
“Why is that funny?” Evan asked.
I hadn’t meant to laugh. It just happened, but now that he was making me think about it. “I’m not sure. Things are just really comfortable with Zach I guess. I hadn’t even thought to find a chick. How about you? Were all your deepest desires and darkest fantasies fulfilled?”
“Oh fuck, yes.” Evan leaned back, arms behind his head and a smirk on his face.
“You wanna tell me about it?”
“One word, my friend. Threesome.”
I reacted how he would want me to, but my mind immediately imagined having two Zachs in that hotel bed instead of one and where everything would go.
I wasn't that hungover, so my imagination thought of that scenario all on its own, which meant I was gay for my best friend. There was probably a more scientific way to say that – sexuality is a spectrum after all – but I hadn’t had feelings about any other man. Even as close as Evan and I were, I wasn’t attracted to him, even though I could admit he was an attractive guy.
“You got quiet real quick. You okay, Teo?” Evan asked, putting a hand on my knee. It wasn’t lost on me either that I didn’t feel a zing or a throb anywhere when he touched me. He wasn’t Zach.
I made sure no one was nearby, before asking, “You ever do anything with a guy? Like, sexually.”
“Honestly?”
I nodded, noticing he didn’t seem surprised at all.
“Yeah. Quite a bit actually. I consider myself bisexual, but I do more with dudes. Like last night.”
He could tell I was taken aback a little. “Not the answer you expected?”
I smiled. “I’m not sure. I never really thought of you that way.”
“Ouchie. My team husband and everything. I guess it was a sexless marriage. I should’ve seen this coming.”
I punched him in the shoulder before getting lost in thought again.
