“Yeah, it would have been so sudden,” I say sadly, thinking of what Axe went through.
“The car was totalled. It was a scene from a horror movie. The doctors got her to the hospital but there was no way they could save her.”
“Did she crash into another car?” I question.
“Yeah. The other driver was on drugs. He survived. Before the trial happened, Axel hunted him down and... I don't want to think about what he did. But I know he killed him. That shocked everyone. In the werewolf community, a rule is don't kill a human. But no one could stop Axel.”
“What did the police do?” I frown.
“No one ever found this guy's body, so the police ruled it that he went on the run.”
“Axe's been through such strife,” I state.
“So have you,” Carson adds.
We hear the door open so we go quiet. Axe walks into the kitchen. I stare at him, thinking about the story Carson just told me. Axe is built like a brick wall. He really would be unstoppable, to anyone.
“What are you girls doing?” he asks, stopping by the bar stool I'm sitting on and resting his hand on the small of my back.
“Cooking,” Carson answers. “How was your talk with Dash?”
“That's authority business, Carson,” he says mockingly.
“Shut up, I'm a part of the alpha's family,” she says sassily, putting her hand on her hip. He chuckles and pulls her into a hug, her sassiness turning to happiness.
“I'm glad you're here.” He kisses her cheek. I smile at their exchange. I've never seen him like that around anyone. His sister is clearly a soft spot for him.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Axe, Carson and I have dinner together and it's great. I finally feel like part of a family for once. Axe even makes a toast saying he's happy both his girls are here. I'm still stunned about him calling me his girl. After dinner, which fills me to the point of being exhausted from too much food, I find the energy to have a shower. Carson goes to bed in a guest room and Axe goes to his room. When I get out of the shower, I wrap a towel around myself and enter my room.
“Elora.” Axe knocks on the door.
“I just got out of the shower,” I tell him.
“Come to my room after you get dressed. I want to talk to you,” his voice is calm yet those words sound demanding.
I throw on some loose clothes and make my way to his room. Before I even get the courage to knock, the door opens. Axe grabs my hand and leads me over to his bed.
“What do you want to talk about?” I ask nervously.
“First, I need to ask, are you all in with me? A hundred percent you want to be with me?” Axe's eyes don't falter from mine. I really need to get used to eye contact with him.
“Yes,” I murmur, and he smiles.
After my talk with Carson, I know Axe is it for me. Joel just wouldn't understand me despite him being my mate.
“Okay, in that case, I need you to understand that in our future, a mark between us is inevitable. How do you feel about that?” he asks, seeming to search my eyes for an answer.
“Ohh.” I bite my bottom lip but Axe pulls my lip from between my teeth with his thumb.
“Don't turn me on. We need to discuss this,” he warns.
“Okay, well, I guess it's what every she-wolf goes through eventually,” I say.
“Yes but that's with their mate. The marking ritual is different when it's two unmated wolves.”
“Oh, what will happen?” I ask.
