Chapter Eighteen
They walkedinto the large office on the ground floor which now seemed to have morphed into Eidolon HQ Monaco style. The entire back wall had a sliding bi-fold door that led out onto a large patio with a heated outdoor pool with a vast decked area, BBQ, and even a pizza oven that would make most chef’s jealous.
Alex looked around the spacious room with wooden shutters on the windows and realised that Lexi had been decorating. Finger painted pictures and children’s drawings and scribbles were hung along one wall. He smiled to himself happy that everything had turned out for the couple.
“So, now we have a very luxurious safe house, but do we have any leads?” he asked dumping his bag on the cream couch and moving towards Liam and Gunner.
“Reid and Blake have gone to meet with a contact who says she might have something,” Liam said with a smirk on his face.
Alex raised an eyebrow at that. As the blonde, cheeky, blue-eyed one of the group, Blake seemed to get more information from women than anyone else. He wasn’t sure if it was his easy approachable nature, his cheesy charming flirty ways, or if he was just that good. But Blake could make a nun blush and then give away Vatican secrets. Perhaps it was his upper middle-class British accent or maybe it was because he seemed to genuinely like being around the fairer sex.
“Well let’s hope he brought his A-game.” He wanted this done and the threat neutralised so he could concentrate on finding out who the traitor was at Eidolon and convincing Evelyn to marry him.
“Does Blake even have a B-game?”
The grin on Gunner’s face grew wider as Alex laughed. “Good point.”
Alex caught sight of Evelyn stepping outside to make a call. She was pacing, her phone to her ear as she spoke, head down, her hair falling over her breast. She had been so sweet with Theo and his heart had beat so fast as he imagined her with their child one day.
Maybe if they had stayed together, gotten married, lived out their dreams as they had planned, they would have a couple of rug rats running around by now. Maybe even old enough to be in high school. He imagined a daughter that looked just like her giving him hell as she wrapped him around her little finger, or a son he could teach to play football or ride a bike.
“What you smiling about?” Liam had come up beside him.
“Nothing. Just thinking.” He looked at his friend and hated the doubt that crept in wondering if it was him and dismissing it straight away. But then that was how he felt about all the team. No way would they betray Jack or Eidolon, it just wasn’t in them. There had to be another explanation.
“Yeah. I guess having a woman like that look at you like she does would make any man think.”
Alex twisted his head to look at him, hearing the slight wistfulness in his voice. “How does she look at me?” Alex was curious to know what others saw when they looked at them.
“Like you can solve climate change while cooking a three-course meal and saving the hungry of the world from starving,” Liam replied as he watched Evelyn.
Alex turned back to her and at that moment she looked up and the smile she gave him was so natural, so sweet, and so sexy that his gut clenched as he fought the fear that flooded his body. If he lost her again, he was finished.
A world without Evelyn was cold, dead, lonely. He had existed for the last fifteen years but now he was living. He would rather be dead than live without her again. The morbid thought shocked him, but he didn’t feel suicidal. It was merely a fact. He loved her so much that he honestly thought that if she were no longer his, his heart would just stop beating.
It had happened with his grandparents. His grandmother had died when he was a boy and not three weeks later his grandpa had died. His mother had always said he died of a broken heart. He had never quite understood it but now he did because he knew they would be that way.
“I would die for her,” he said responding to Liam’s words. He didn’t take his eyes off her as she moved through the door and walked directly to him.
“I know you would, but we won’t let that happen.” Liam slapped him on the back and moved away to give them some privacy.
“What was that about?” Evelyn’s eyes held a hint of wariness.
Alex pulled her close his hands going to her hips and hers flattened on his belly. “Nothing. Just finding out what Blake is up to. He’s gone to meet a female contact. He has quite the way with women. Liam was worried his dick would drop off if he kept putting it where he shouldn’t.” He laughed as she pushed him and wrinkled her nose in distaste.
“Gross.” She laughed.
He tossed his head back and laughed at her outrage. “Maybe but it is funny.”
“Hmmm.” She raised an eyebrow at him.
“Now, enough with talking about another man’s dick. Let’s go see if we can find where Simon Booth is and wipe the fucker off the face of the earth.”
“I wasn’t talking about his dick, you were.”
“Woman, you’re doing it now.” His lips twitched at her indignation.
Evelyn was sexy as fuck when she was in a snit and he wasn’t above winding her up a little to get her that way.
