Chapter Six
The roarof blood was ringing in his ears; he was so angry he could hardly see straight. He felt movement beside him and watched as Savannah moved into the theatre, gowned and gloved and ready to take over from the dipshit asshole who was swaying on his feet with a scalpel poised in his hand. Mark’s gut clenched with anxiety, and he walked toward the door, not wanting to leave Savannah alone with this man.
Her ex-husband of all people. He wanted to rush and grab the man by the throat and teach him a lesson he wouldn’t soon forget but he knew the situation was precarious at best. One wrong move and that kid could lose his life.
Ignoring the hated stench of hospitals that brought back so many ugly memories, he watched through the glass, ready to step in if he was needed. Savannah looked calm and composed as if she dealt with this kind of thing every day.
“Andy!” She called the man’s name in a soft voice, and he turned and glared at her.
“What do you want?”
He sounded antagonistic and defensive, and Mark’s hands fisted at his side, and he took a step closer to the door.
“Andy, step away from that boy. You seem tired. Let me take over so you can go and rest.”
“Oh, now you care. Now you want to listen to me.” He was waving the scalpel around as the two nurses and the anaesthetist watched on, seemingly holding their breath.
“Andy, you know I care, and I’ll listen, but you need to let me do this. You can’t operate like this. Look at your patient and tell me you’re giving him your very best.”
Andy glanced at the boy and back to Savannah who’d moved closer, her hand outstretched to take the scalpel.
Suddenly Andy crashed the instruments by his side to the floor, the metal clanging together in the silent room as he grabbed for Savannah. Taking her by the arm, he pushed her against the wall as the nurses screamed and the other doctor put himself between them and the unconscious kid on the table who was thankfully unaware.
Mark felt his blood turn to ice as the glint of the blade against Savannah’s perfect throat caught his eye. He moved slowly inside the theatre, knowing he shouldn’t interfere but not able to stop himself. Savannah glanced at him and then back at Andy.
“Andy, don’t do this. Let me go and we can talk after. I need to help this boy first.”
“I need another chance, Savi. I need you to take me back. Let me back into your life.”
Andy Farr was snivelling and crying like a broken man, but Mark didn’t feel a single moment of sympathy. All he wanted to do right now was rip him apart. He planted his legs apart ready to move if he got the chance, his muscles almost quivering with rage.
“Okay, let me help this boy and then we’ll talk.”
“You promise?”
Mark saw Savannah swallow and the nerves and fear she was trying to hide as she talked her ex down. He was beginning to think there was way more to Savannah Sankey than he’d realised.
“Yes, I promise.”
“Okay.”
He dropped the blade and Mark moved, wrestling Andy off Savannah and shoving his face into the wall, pinning his arms behind his back.
“Get off me. Who the fuck are you?”
Andy wriggled to get Mark to let go but he only tightened his hold. “Your worst fucking nightmare, asshole.” Mark pushed him harder against the wall, feeling a sense of satisfaction when the man cried out in pain. Served the fucker right for attacking Savannah and that was without allowing himself to think about the poor kid on the table whose brain he’d been about to hack into.
“Deck, do you have this? I need to operate on this boy.”
“Yeah, I got it. Do your thing, doc.”
Savannah gave him a brief nod and swung into action, giving orders, and taking control of the room. Mark wished he could stay and watch her in action, but he needed to get Andy, who was still whining, out of the room. Deck smiled when he saw Detective Aubrey Herbert waiting for them outside the operating room with two uniformed officers.
“I thought you told Will you were having a quiet night in and couldn’t make poker night.”
Aubrey was Will’s fiancée. Mark personally thought his boss, a silent partner at Eidolon, should hurry up and marry the clever and beautiful detective and stop dicking around.
“What can I say, I got bored.”
