“Hmm.” Aubrey flattened her lips and said no more although he knew she wanted to.
“This man assaulted me, and I want to press charges.” Andy tried to jerk out of Decker’s grip but got nowhere fast when Decker just tightened his hold.
Mark glared at Andy Farr as he handed him over to the two uniformed officers.
Aubrey raised a brow as she stepped forward. “Is that so? Well, I’d think medical malpractice and threatening Dr Sankey’s life is the bigger of your problems right now, Dr Farr.”
Mark smirked at the red-faced man who looked pathetic now. He was tall and slim, and some would say good looking, but he was in no way good enough for Savannah. A beauty like her could have any man she wanted. She was clever, kind, funny, and could have her pick so why had she chosen Andy Farr?
Ha, she agreed to friends with benefits with you, asshole.
What had made her agree to it? He knew why he wanted it. She was everything he shouldn’t want, and he couldn’t stay away, and this allowed him the best of both worlds. But what was her reasoning? The thought made him oddly uncomfortable, and he pushed it away.
He watched as the two uniformed officers led Andy Farr away and the Medical Director came rushing toward them. The man was short, balding, with half-rimmed spectacles perched on his nose and a pinched look on his face, but when he got to them, he smiled and shoved his hand toward him.
“I’m Percy Gromadski, the Medical Director here. I can’t thank you enough for your help.”
Decker smiled at the man, getting a genuine feel about him. “Mark Decker, I’m a friend of Dr Sankey and was with her when the call came in, so it was no problem at all.”
“Well, I thank you anyway. Andy Farr is a wonderful doctor. At least he was but he’s been sailing down the wrong path these last few years, and this is the final straw. Dr Sankey, however, is one of our shining stars.”
“I’m sure she is.”
Deck could feel Aubrey watching him and knew she was taking in every single word especially the bit about him being with Savannah when the call came. Before he knew it, the entire team would be up in his business. Moving down the hall, he scrubbed his hands down his face. This was getting out of control already, but he couldn’t seem to walk away.
An image of her at Jack and Astrid’s wedding looking good enough to eat popped into his mind and made his dick twitch with desire. He wasn’t sure what it was about the good doctor, but she affected him in ways no other woman did. It was like some visceral need had pounded through him from the minute he’d met her.
The first time he’d seen her it had felt like a sucker punch, and he’d rejected it violently, acting like a complete wanker towards her, when what he really wanted was to pull her close and whisper all the things he wanted to do to her in her ear and feel her softness against his skin.
Getting to know her tonight was the most fun he’d had in a long time with a woman outside of the bedroom and it terrified him. Deciding he needed coffee, he went in search of the canteen and found it closed. He glanced at his watch and realised it was already eleven pm. He found a vending machine and bought himself a black coffee, wincing when he took his first sip and it tasted revolting. Dumping it in the trash, he bought a bottled water and wandered back toward the theatre where Aubrey was still waiting.
“Hey, you still here?”
“Yeah, I drove Savannah, so I thought I’d wait until she finishes to give her a lift home.”
“I didn’t know you two were a thing.” Aubrey cocked her head as if the question wasn’t loaded. The whole team knew he didn’t date and some of the reason why, so this was new.
“We aren’t. We’re just friends.”
“With benefits?”
Decker looked down at the far too intuitive woman and raised a brow.
She laughed and held her hands up. “Sorry, you know if I don’t get the dirt my girls will kick my ass.”
“You could, you know, not tell them?” he suggested, knowing he was pissing in the wind with that one.
“No way. This is far too juicy not to share.”
“Well, I hate to disappoint but nothing has happened between us. It’s strictly platonic.” He didn’t add that as soon as he could, he’d be changing that.
“Well, that sucks.”
Decker laughed and took a seat, stretching out his legs. “You waiting to get a statement from Savannah?”
“Yeah, I need to know what happened. The nurses have given statements, but I still need to talk to the scrub nurses inside and the other doctor.”
“It could be a while. I don’t know what happened to that kid, but it sounded bad.”
