“Not now,” Tate says.

Harlan scans the dark station.

“Where is the lockbox?”

“Gone.”

“The key?”

“Gone.”

“The envelope?”

“Also gone.”

Harlan’s expression remains calm, but his eyes change.

“You’re lying.”

“Lieutenant Ross removed the evidence before you arrived.”

“Where did she take it?”

“I don’t know.”

He turns the weapon toward me.

“Deputy Ellis?”

“I don’t know either.”

“Then we have a problem.”

“No. You do.”

His eyebrows rise.

“Vance confessed before he died.”

Silence.

“He told us you ordered the twenty-three men executed,” I continue. “He told us you sent seventeen gunmen into the valley to kill Grant’s team. He admitted Captain Miller changed the extraction route on your orders.”

Harlan looks at my body camera again.

“He also admitted shooting Grant.”

“That was Robert’s decision.”

“He said you wanted every Ranger dead.”

“Men say many things when they’re trying to save themselves.”

“He wasn’t trying to save himself at the end.”

Harlan’s jaw tightens.
