Harlan begins backing toward the rear door.
“You won’t make it out of the building,” Tate says.
“I only need one vehicle.”
“They’re all blocked.”
“Then Deputy Ellis and I will walk.”
“No,” I say.
Harlan’s grip tightens.
“That wasn’t a request.”
“Neither was mine.”
I drive the back of my head into his face.
Pain bursts through my skull.
Harlan stumbles.
The gun moves away from my ribs.
I trap his wrist with both hands and twist.
He tries to pull me back.
I drop my weight and drive my elbow into his injured face.
His grip breaks.
The pistol hits the floor.
Harlan lunges for it.
I kick it down the hallway.
He grabs my ankle.
I fall.
Harlan climbs over me, one hand closing around my throat.
I strike his face.
Once.
Twice.
He doesn’t release me.
Blackness creeps into the edges of my vision.
Then the rear door crashes open.
Wolf and Trigger enter.
