Harlan looks up.
I use the distraction.
My knee drives into his side.
His weight shifts.
I roll, trap his arm, and force him face-first onto the floor.
Havoc reaches us first.
He drives one knee between Harlan’s shoulders and pulls his other arm behind him.
Trigger grabs the first wrist.
Sheriff Tate snaps handcuffs around both.
Harlan stops fighting.
Just like that.
One second, he’s trying to kill me.
The next, he becomes calm again.
He turns his head enough to look at me.
“You think this ends with me?”
I kneel beside him, rubbing my throat.
“No.”
His eyes narrow.
“It ends with every person who helped you.”
For the first time, Arthur Harlan looks uncertain.
Sheriff Tate pulls him to his feet.
“Arthur Harlan, you’re under arrest for conspiracy, murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, obstruction of justice, and about twenty other charges we’ll discuss after you have an attorney.”
Hampton wipes blood from his mouth.
“You forgot unlawful imprisonment.”
Tate looks at him.
“You’re lawfully imprisoned.”
“I meant what he did to me.”
“You shot my deputy.”
“I have apologized repeatedly.”
Trigger picks up the small key Hampton dropped.
