Tipping my head to gaze at him, I didn’t have an answer for him. Some days, Milo Pampinella was the love of my life, some days I wished I never met him. Then there were moments like now, where I was staring into the most beautiful blue eyes I’d ever seen, and felt an emotion I didn’t understand, but craved.

“You don’t need to be scared, I’m going to protect you.”

“I’m not scared for me, I’m scared for you.”

His features softened with a faint chuckle. “I’m tough, kitten. You don’t worry about me.”

“And if something does happen to you? What then? Did your parents have a backup kid for Milo?” I snipped, hating the Shaw’s so much right now.

“No, that’s what my cousins are for. That’s why Frank has been by Milo’s side since I was assigned to you. Technically, it should be the other way around, but Milo trusts me more, so I was the one who became your guardian.”

Scoffing, I shook my head, gazing over his shoulder at the flames. “I don’t understand that kind of life. Babies should be born because of love and passion, not for militia purposes.”

“There are all kinds of people in the world. There are people like me who are here for a certain purpose, to be strong and hard and protect.”

He caressed my cheek, drawing my attention. “Then there are people like you. Pure, innocent, loving, wonderful, amazing. People like you are what give this rotten planet a reason to keep going. That’s why I’m here, to make sure the bad shit in the world can’t touch your light. You’re far too important, kitten.”

“And Milo?”

He chuckled and groaned. “Ah, Milo. People like Milo are just untouchable, no matter what. They get the money, the glam, the easy life.” He rested his cheek in the pillow, searching my face. “The most amazing, precious gifts.”

My heart aching, I acted on impulse, hoping to ease the pain. My palm on his cheek, I stretched my neck and kissed him, keeping my eyes open.

Startled, he didn’t react for a couple seconds. My tongue flicked against his and his hand balled into a fist on my hip, tugging me closer. Neither of us closing our eyes, the kiss intensified, the passion growing. He ran his hand beneath my shirt, pushing it upward to cup my breast. My brows arched and I whimpered, my lips stilling but not parting from his.

Wyatt paused, our shallow breaths pushing into one another’s mouths. Tentatively, he curled his fingers around the breast and squeezed, pushing it toward my ribs.

I moaned and arched. His lips started kissing again, so I did, as well. Urging me to my back, he lifted on an elbow, not breaking our connection, to unbutton my shirt and move the material aside. Resituating myself, I unhooked my bra. He pushed the cups to my chest and fondled my bare skin.

“Mm,” I purred, covering his hand to hold him there.

Finally breaking the kiss, he tucked his nose beneath my ear, tasting my flesh. “You’re so special, kitten. I’ve never met anyone like you.”

Heady, I held the back of his neck, curving my spine toward him as his kisses made a scorching trail to my breast, pulling the nipple between his teeth.

“Ahmm! Oh.”

His hand caressed down my rounded stomach and unbuttoned my slacks. Working the zipper, he eased it inside and cupped my pussy through my silk underwear. Scattering feathery kisses back to my ear, he groaned, sending me into a frenzy of desire.

“Wyatt.”

“Chazzy,” he croaked, dipping his tongue into my ear. “You are so amazing, kitten.” He rose to his elbow again, stretching his neck to kiss his way to my forehead and down the other side of my face before returning to my lips, his tongue gently rolling into my mouth.

His middle finger pressed into my slit, my wetness seeping through the fabric.

My head tipped back for a drawn out moan, his mouth immediately on my neck, his tongue swirling the hollow of my throat.

“You feel so good, Chazzy. I love being with you.”

I bit my bottom lip, spreading my legs and circling my hips, trying to encourage a better touch.

“God, I wish you were mine.”

My heart crashed on my ribs, and I squealed, grabbing the sides of his head to shove him away so I could stare at him in astonishment.

For a moment, he looked horrified he said that, and he tensed. His breathing stopped, his fingers didn’t move, and he refused to blink.

“Wyatt?” I whimpered, scared at the fluttering that was turning my insides over.
