EPILOGUE

One month later

The oaken gates of Castle MacDonald groaned open as if in protest, and Darragh's heart swelled with anticipation. He gripped Lara's hand tighter, her small fingers interlaced with his own, their palms slick with nervous perspiration. The pungent scent of horses and earth mingled with the sweet aroma of the wildflowers that adorned the courtyard.

"Ah, there he is!" Aiden, Darragh's older brother, stood tall and proud in the sunlight that bathed the cobblestones. His smile was wide, a mirror to Darragh's own joy.

"Brother!" Darragh boomed, releasing Lara's hand and striding forward to embrace Aiden in a bear hug. Their laughter echoed off the stone walls, and for a moment, the shadows of past feuds were obscured by the warmth of reunion.

"Ye've been missed, Darragh," Aiden said, clapping him on the back. "And who might this bonnie lass be?" He turned his gaze to Lara, his eyes twinkling with curiosity.

"Allow me to introduce Lara MacLean, the love of me life." Darragh beckoned her closer, pride swelling within him as she stepped forward, her blue eyes shimmering like the depths of the loch.

"MacLean, ye say?" Aiden raised an eyebrow in a jokeful way, but he barely had the time to extend a hand when Ciara, his wife, appeared beside him, her face radiant with delight. She embraced Lara as if they had known each other for years, her words spilling out like spring water. "Lara, 'tis wonderful to meet ye. I’m Ciara."

"Thank you, Ciara. I'm honored tae be here," Lara replied, a shy smile gracing her lips.

Darragh's chest tightened with emotion as he watched his family embrace the woman he loved. For the first time in years, he felt whole. A sense of belonging surged through him, anchoring him to the moment like a ship moored in safe harbor.

"Come," Aiden said, gesturing grandly with his arm. "Let us celebrate yer return and the joining of our families."

Darragh nodded as he smiled at Lara once more. She grinned back at him, a picture of happiness. Holding hands, they followed Aiden and Ciara into the heart of Castle MacDonald.

The sight of his old home warmed Darragh's heart as they entered. A sudden flash of vibrant red caught his eye, and he was filled with joy as Lillie, his sister, darted across the courtyard toward him.

"Darragh!" she cried, her voice a joyous peal of laughter. She flung herself into his arms, as if she were still a wee lass clinging to her elder brother for protection. "Thank the Wee Man ye're safe. I've missed ye so much!"

Darragh felt his heart swell within him, a warmth spreading from his chest outward as he held Lillie tightly. "Aye, I've missed ye too, sweet sister," he murmured, burying his face in her hair, deeply inhaling the familiar sweet scent of heather and herbs.

"Ye've grown even more handsome since ye left," Lillie teased, pulling back to meet his gaze, her green eyes sparkling with mirth. "Though I see ye've gained a few more scars."

"Ah, well," Darragh chuckled, shifting his weight as Lillie stepped back. "I suppose they lend me some character, eh?"

"Aye, I reckon they dae." Lillie tilted her head, her gaze flickering to where Lara stood nearby, watching their reunion with a tender smile. "And who is this bonnie lass ye've brought home?"

"Allow me to introduce Lara MacLean," Darragh said, extending a hand to guide Lara forward. She stepped forward, her blue eyes alight with curiosity and warmth.

"Hello, Lillie," Lara said softly, reaching out to take the younger woman's hand. "I've heard so much about ye from Darragh."

"Have ye now?" Lillie grinned, her eyes twinkling as she clasped Lara's hand firmly. "Well, I'm eager to hear what me brother has been saying about me."

"Only good things, I assure ye," Lara replied, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink. "He spoke often of your wit and courage, and how he longed to see ye again."

Lillie's smile softened at the words, and she glanced back at Darragh, warmth and gratitude shining in her eyes.

The deep chasm that had once divided their families now seemed like a distant memory, barely a whisper against the laughter and shared joy of the moment. As he watched Lillie embrace Lara, welcoming her into their family with open arms, he knew the future awaiting them was one of love, forgiveness, and unity.

The scent of freshly cut flowers filled Darragh's nostrils, mingling with the earthy fragrance of damp stone as he stepped into the courtyard. A riot of color greeted his eyes; banners in hues of green, blue, and gold danced to the rhythm of the wind, their edges catching on the rough stone walls of Castle MacDonald.

"Would ye look at this," Darragh whispered in awe. "These colors… 'tis like a dream."

"Aye, it is a sight to behold," Lara agreed, now at his side once more. "'Tis beautiful, Darragh."

"Och, ye've nae seen anythin' yet," Lillie chimed in, her voice full of excitement as she tugged at her brother's arm. "Come with me, I'll show ye."

Darragh allowed himself to be led away from the bustling courtyard. The music grew louder, the melodies of fiddles and bagpipes intertwining with laughter and the joyous clapping of hands. As they approached the great hall, he felt the vibrations of the wooden floor beneath his boots, resonating with the energy of the celebration.

"Here we are," Lillie announced, flinging open the heavy oak doors. The hall came alive before them, thrumming with life as guests swirled around the dance floor, their movements fluid and graceful, like leaves caught in an autumn breeze. Platters laden with roasted meats, fresh fruits, and sweet pastries lined the tables, their aromas wafting through the air.
