“I don’t know if you’re going to get any trick-or-treaters this far out.”

She shook her head. “I don’t mind. I actually intend to head into town and leave buckets of candy. I’m also signed up to visit the scary fun house, which is just the high school turned into a monster dungeon. It’s going to be a lot of fun. Do you want to go with me?” she asked.

He was not interested in being around other people. None of that had changed since getting out of prison. However, he happened to love spending time with Morwenna, and he didn’t want to let her down.

“Sure.”

“Great, I was thinking you could go as a pirate,” she said.

“What?”

“A pirate. I’ve got a pirate’s wife costume. I think it should fit you—I mean the pirate—but if you want to dress up as the wife, you can.”

He rubbed at his temples, and Morwenna was gone, then came back with a costume hanging off her finger. “What do you think?” she asked.

“You’re going to be the death of me.” There was even an eye patch to go with it.

“Maybe we’ll even find you a date?” She gave a little shrug of her shoulders.

He could only shake his head. There was no other woman he wanted but Morwenna.

Bolt looked down at the divorce papers, and the urge to throw them right in the trash was strong, but he held himself back. Morwenna was not letting this go, and even his mother, father, and the whole club were not happy with him.

He glanced around the clubhouse at the guys who were getting rubbed up by their women. A couple of club women were dancing naked on the bar, and Star sat in the corner, pouting because he wouldn’t fall for her tricks.

It was strange. Ever since his mother had returned from her last girls’ night, she hadn’t just given him a disapproving look. She slapped Star across the room and proceeded to slap him around the back of the head. She ranted at him, everything he had lost. During her rant to him, to herself, to the whole club, she talked about Morwenna. How they all failed her by turning a blind eye to all his time spent with Star. To the three children, how they hid from her.

She talked about what Morwenna had done for the club, not just now, but in the past nine, now nearly ten years. How the cops had gone around to her home when they were only eighteen, attempting to intimidate her, but Morwenna called Maverick and Storm.

Not once had they gone out of their way for Morwenna. Even when the kids needed looking after because Star wasn’t in a position to look after them, it was Morwenna who stepped up. She did everything everyone asked, and in return, she got nothing.

It was like a constant slap in the face. Even after the disaster of girls’ night, Morwenna was not aware of what Storm had said, she still kept coming around with food. She helped anyone who asked for it. She even looked after his kids. Morwenna was the love of his life. He had always loved her, even when he was a little boy, he’d known how special she was.

This was not a good feeling to have.

Looking at the divorce documents, all he could think about was Morwenna. All his life, she’d been there. Every memory he had was with her. Glancing across the bar, he looked at Star, and his stupid decision to be with her made him sick.

“You’re looking a little pissed,” King said, pulling out a chair opposite him.

“Just thinking.”

“I see you got the divorce papers again,” King said.

He wasn’t in the mood to talk. Hadn’t been for a long time. “I’ve got shit I need to think about.” Shoving out his chair, he pushed the documents back into the envelope and made his way outside into the cold night air. It felt refreshing, and he made his way toward the far wall, near one of the trash cans.

Several of the guys were standing around, having a smoke, enjoying themselves. They all looked so freaking happy, while he was the furthest thing from happy.

“Are you all right, son?” Maverick said, coming to stand with him.

“Yeah, I’m fine.”

“Are you about to toss those documents back into the fire?”

“No, but I’m thinking about it.” He shrugged. “What would you do, Dad, if this was Mom?”

Maverick laughed. “That’s not ever going to happen.”
