‘Zara? Are you awake?’ Dr Thompson’s gentle voice cut through the fog of Zara’s despair.

‘Yes, I am.’ Zara turned to meet kind brown eyes framed by curls similar to her own as the oncologist entered bearing an aura of quiet confidence.

‘May I?’ Dr Thompson gestured towards the chair on the opposite side of the bed, her movements careful and respectful of the intimate space between husband and wife.

‘Please.’ Jay nodded, making room for her to pass by him.

‘Zara, I know this has been really hard,’ Dr Thompson began, choosing her words with care, ‘and I want you to know how well you’re doing, soldiering through it all with a positive mindset.’

‘Thank you, for saying that.’ Zara met the doctor’s gaze, finding solace in the empathy mirrored there — this wonderful woman had sailed through the stormy seas with countless others like a seasoned captain amid the tempests of illness.

‘I know I don’t get to see you as often as you’d like,’ the head oncologist continued. ‘But know that my team and I are with you every step of the way, ensuring that you have the best quality of life possible during your treatment, and your stay here with us.’

‘I appreciate all of you, I really do.’ Zara’s voice quivered, revealing raw vulnerability.

‘I know you do,’ Dr Thompson affirmed. ‘And in saying that, I’m going to give you the okay to go home.’

‘Are you serious!’ A jolt of hope coupled with the buoyancy of relief fired through Zara’s chemo-riddled veins.

‘Yes, I am.’ The doctor smiled as she placed a gentle hand on Zara’s arm. ‘It’s time for you to be in the place where your heart truly resides.’

In that moment, the bond was solidified between patient and doctor. It was a rapport built on mutual respect and a shared determination to face the unknown head-on. And with her oncologist’s reassurance, Zara allowed herself to lean on another’s strength, no longer burdened with shielding her family from every crashing wave, because that would be impossible when she returned home and was constantly surrounded by them.

‘Thank you, again, Dr Thompson, for everything you do,’ she murmured gratefully, a newfound courage mingling with her gratitude as she squeezed Jay’s hand in a silent pact.

‘No need to thank me, Zara, it’s my job, but I also do it because I truly care about my patients.’

* * *

Zara’s hands wrapped around her mug as she momentarily lost herself in the steam rising from her hot chocolate. ‘Jay,’ she whispered, looking up to face him. ‘I really do love you, so very much, I hope you know that, my dear husband.’

‘Aw, my darling, I love you more and more every day.’ The late-afternoon sunshine cast a warm glow over his distinguished features, highlighting the lines time had etched around his eyes — ones that had seen her at her best and now witnessed her at her most vulnerable.

What was more, in those eyes Zara saw not just the reflection of their past but the promise of a possible future. If only she could believe it, too. If only it could be her reality. ‘I’m a lucky woman, having a wonderful man like you love me like you do.’ She bit back emotions, not wanting to cry again.

Jay’s slow, easy smile was one that reminded her of the moment they’d met all those years ago in Amalfi, over the slivers of a broken ceramic plate. ‘You’re an easy one to love, Zara Maverick.’

‘Ditto, Maverick, tenfold.’ She reached out and took his hand. ‘You know, I can feel it now that I’m back home,’ she continued, her voice steadier, the words glimmering like delicate seashells washed ashore by the waves of her resolve. ‘An incey wincey glimmer of hope.’

Jay’s hands enveloped hers with a tenderness that spoke louder than any declaration of love. ‘Then we hold onto that,’ he said, his voice gentle. ‘We hold onto it with everything we’ve got.’

Biting her lip to stop it from quivering, she nodded, allowing the swell of emotions to rise within her without fear of drowning in them as the room seemed to pause in reverence. Time stretched and hovered, the ticking of the cuckoo clock on the wall synchronising with the beat of their united hearts in a sweet sonata of shared strength. And as she gazed into Jay’s smile-lined crinkled eyes, which held the wisdom of years and the spark of undying youth, she knew she would fight until her very last breath.

And then some.

‘Every second, every minute, we’ll cherish it all,’ she finally affirmed, her conviction blooming like the wildflowers that had recently sprung up in their garden after the rains.

And as time flickered by them both, they did just that.

With each sunset that painted the sky with hues of survival, and every dawn that whispered the chance of new beginnings, she fought. Hard. Not just for herself, but for the love that had been her guiding light through the darkest nights. This chapter of her life might be reaching a close, but the love story between her and Jay was far from over. It was a tale written by the hands of fate and the hearts of two souls who refused to surrender to the cruel march of time. And together, they’d stand on the precipice of tomorrow, where hope danced on the horizon, a beacon calling them forward towards a future filled with endless possibilities.
