There’s no way she’s that funny.
Romeo’s gaze snaps to me, and my eyes narrow at the guilty expression on his face. What did that fucker do?
Before I can storm over there and find out what, Skull sits down next to me.
Guess it’s time for another lecture.
Wedded bliss, right?
Someone shoot me.
They can use the new guns we got through this marriage alliance.
ELENA
Dark bruises mark my wrist from where my father grabbed me when I told him I didn’t want this marriage. Worse, Suit saw them. Father had flung me onto the ground and then screamed at me while I was lying there. I wish I could say it’s the worst he’d ever done, but I’d be lying.
“I’m really sorry about before. I shouldn’t have just walked in,” Romeo says in his deep voice, shifting on his feet.
“It’s okay, think of it as an icebreaker,” I tease, and he laughs.
“It’s going to be my funeral when Suit finds out,” he replies, but he’s still grinning.
“You were actually the first man to see me…” I trail off, clearing my throat. Sometimes I ramble when I’m feeling uncomfortable. “Never mind, you did not need to know that.”
His brow furrows, but then his different colored eyes widen when he realizes what I mean. “Well, I’m even more sorry then. And now yes, Suit is definitely going to murder me.”
“I won’t say anything,” I vow, not that Suit will care. He’d probably be happy if some other man caught my eye.
“No, I’m not going to do that to you. I’ll tell him. It will be worse when it comes out if I’m not honest.”
I smile up at him. “Everyone is so nice here. It’s not as scary as I thought it was going to be.”
He laughs again. “I don’t think we’ve been called nice before.” He glances up and then clears his throat. “I’m going to go and get myself a drink. Enjoy the rest of your night.”
I look over to where Romeo was and see Suit sitting there with his eyes pinned on me, an unreadable expression on his face.
“Do you want another drink, Elena?” Meredith asks, nodding toward the bar.
“Sure. This is my first time drinking aside from a wine with dinner,” I admit, and her hazel eyes flare.
“Really? We should try different things to see what you like then.”
“Okay.” I smile, letting her pull me along to the bar. She goes behind it, pours a few different drinks, and places them in front of me.
I take a sip from the first one and make a face. Meredith laughs. “Okay, not whiskey.”
“Are you trying to get my wife drunk, Doc?” Suit asks Meredith, sliding up next to me.
Hearing him call me his wife sends a shiver down my spine. This marriage might only be in name for him, so I wish he wouldn’t send me any mixed signals.
“She doesn’t know what she likes,” Meredith replies, pointing to the clear fizzy-looking glass. “Try that one.”
I take a small sip, and then another. “I like this.”
“Vodka mixed with soda,” she replies. Suit takes the whiskey I didn’t like and brings it to his lips, drinking from the same spot my nude lipstick left a mark.
“I like this,” I repeat, putting it down and then picking up the next one. I make a face as I try it. “This one is strong.”
