Tonight, I’m sitting on Jay’s couch with a glass of wine in my hand while he finishes dinner in the kitchen. I can hear him moving around, opening cabinets and talking to me every few minutes, and every time I hear his voice, I find myself smiling.
Apparently, I’m not as subtle as I thought.
“You’re doing it again,” he calls from the kitchen.
He appears in the doorway a moment later, leaning against the frame with his arms crossed. There’s a small smile on his face, and I know exactly what he means.
“What?”
“That face.”
I laugh. “What face?”
“Your thinking face.”
“Well, that makes sense because I am thinking.”
I take another drink of wine, mostly so I have something to do, and he laughs before disappearing back into the kitchen.
For a few minutes, the house settles into a comfortable quiet. I watch him move around the kitchen, and I realize how much I’ve come to love moments like this. Nothing dramatic is happening. No one is trying to drag me into a nightmare. There’s no supernatural crisis waiting around the corner.
It’s just us.
I glance toward the kitchen again. “Hey.”
“Hmm?”
“What’s Shane like?”
Jay stops what he’s doing.
“Shane?”
“Your brother.”
“I know who Shane is.”
“Just making sure,” I tease.
He looks over at me, studying my face. “Why?”
“I’ve never met him.”
Jay gives me a look that immediately makes me suspicious.
“Yeah. There’s a good reason for that.”
I laugh. “What does that mean?”
“It means Shane is… Shane.”
“That clears up nothing.”
“Trust me. You don’t want to meet him.”
I shake my head, smiling. “I think I’d like to.”
“Are you sure?”
