“Then we’ll come back, get all dolled up, and head downstairs for dinner. You’re going to love Adam’s menu. Lilith’s husband. He’s one of the best chefs in the state,” she said while she got ready.
“So Lilith said a number of times.” Max chuckled.
“Go get dressed. We’re supposed to meet your sister in”—she glanced at her watch—“five minutes.”
“What does one wear to a massage?” he asked as he walked towards the glass doors.
“Shorts and a T-shirt. It doesn’t really matter since you’ll get naked and wear a robe the entire time.” She pulled on a pair of yoga pants and a sports top. Then tried to comb her hair and ended up putting it up in a loose bun.
The three of them strolled down the stairs, then took another set of stairs to the lower level along the back of the building to the massive day spa.
The glass doors opened into a reception area.
A dark-haired woman greeted them. “Welcome, I’m Heather. You must be Max, Cora, and Missy.” She smiled at them. “Would you like some champagne while we wait for your rooms to be ready?”
“Hell yes,” Missy said, and Heather chuckled.
“Ditto,” Cora added.
“When in Rome.” Max shrugged. “Hit me too.”
For the next two hours, Cora allowed herself to be completely pampered.
Since they were okay with it, the three of them shared a large group massage room instead of being separated into smaller single rooms. That way, they could all chat and enjoy each other’s company.
Missy said she didn’t care as long as she didn’t have to see her brother naked.
While her face was slathered in wonderful-smelling goo, Cora sipped some amazing champagne and got a clear coat of nail polish on her fingernails and toes.
She explained to the woman doing her nails that she was a professional dancer before starting on her pedicure.
“I could tell.” The woman smiled at her. “I’ve seen feet like this a few times,” she assured her. “We’ll have your toes looking as good as they dance.”
“I like your toes,” Max said from across the room.
“Ugh, get a room,” Missy joked from under her face mask.
“We have two, not that I plan on using mine much while we’re here,” Max pointed out.
“Gross,” Missy said.
“Aren’t you seeing anyone?” Cora asked, trying to change the subject.
“I was, but he left me for a job.” Missy sighed.
“Oh?” Max asked. “Who? Ken. Carl. What was his name?”
“Cade,” Missy said with a sigh.
“What kind of job?” Cora asked.
“He didn’t say. Just… left.” Missy’s voice sounded slightly off.
“Was it the real deal?” Max asked softly.
“I thought so.” Missy got quiet. “But I guess not. So, I think I found the perfect building to open Sweet Expectations.”
“Oh?” Cora asked. She knew Missy had changed the subject on purpose and went with it.
