Veronica put on her witch hat and did a twirl in her black dress. “How do I look?”
“Awesome!”
She beamed. “I’m feeling okay today, but I don’t know how long we’ll stay.” She eyed me up and down. “Logan’s jaw will drop to the floor when he sees you. I don’t get the elf ears, though.”
There was no way I was telling her my costume was my cosplay of the character I played in Dragonspire. It would take too long to explain. I was still self-conscious about it because it was the first time I wore something that revealed my mid-drift since Rosie was born.
I wrapped my arms around my bare middle. “You think I look okay, though? Seth kept saying I still hadn’t lost my baby weight.”
Veronica’s eyes flashed in anger. “BLAISE!” she yelled out, startling me, and then I heard the thunderous footsteps of her fiancé running up the steps like something was on fire.
When Blaise got into their massive en suite bathroom, his chest was heaving, and an anguished look was across his face. The cape of his devil costume was askew as he stared at his pregnant fiancée with worry. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Nothing. Tell Lily she’s hot.”
Blaise raised an eyebrow and stood up straight, adjusting his cape. “Is this a test?”
“No!” Veronica laughed. “She’s feeling self-conscious.”
That was when Blaise finally looked at me and took a step back. “Whoa. Wait, are you an elf from that nerd game Logan plays?”
Shit.
Veronica whipped her head around. “Is that true?”
“Maybe,” I muttered.
“Well yeah, he said you play it together,” Blaise said.
Veronica cocked her head at me. “What?”
“We play online together,” I explained. “We have for a long time. We didn’t realize that until the last time we went out.”
Blaise laughed. “Sweets, I told you, they’re perfect for each other. Total nerds!”
I shook my head. “It’s not like that, Blaise.”
Blaise rolled his eyes. “Okay…well, V and I said it was only ‘temporary’ until we went to your wedding, and now we’re having a baby.” He put a meaty hand on Veronica’s stomach protectively, and she beamed. They were so cute, but he was wrong. It didn’t matter what they thought because Logan and I knew we were just having some occasional fun.
“I wish I’d never married Seth, but I’m glad it brought you together,” I told them.
“Sorry, Lil, I should have told you,” Veronica offered.
“It is what it is,” I muttered.
I’d never stop feeling guilty about what happened with Veronica and Seth, even though it wasn’t my fault. And she’d never stop feeling guilty that she never told me I was the unwilling other woman.
Blaise tilted his head to the side and stared at me. “Logan won’t want to go to the party.”
Panic coursed through me.
“Why? Do I look that bad?” I asked.
Maybe this was a bad idea and Seth had been right about my body not looking the way it used to.
“He means because he’ll want to take you home and fuck you,” Veronica explained.
“Oh,” I breathed out in relief.
