That meant she was going to eat with her hands and make a mess, and I didn’t want that.

“She’s got it,” Logan said. “Right, little miss?”

Rosie made a noise of agreement, so I took a bite of my salad.

Hal swung back around to fill our waters. “Hey, some guy was looking for you earlier,” he said to me.

“What guy?” I asked.

He shrugged. “He wouldn’t give me his name or tell me what it was about. Just thought you should know.”

He dropped off the check and left while I mulled over his words. That sounded very sketchy, but there was little to go on. If it was a client, they would have called or emailed.

“What was that about?” Logan asked.

“Not sure,” I admitted.

The center of his brow creased, but I waved him off. It was probably nothing.

We had to leave the bar soon after because we had two kid meltdowns. Definitely time for a nap. We boxed up our lunches and brought them back to Logan’s place.

Should I have taken Rosie home to my mom’s instead of spending more time with Logan? Probably. But I wanted to milk every hour out of spending time with him before he went on the road.

Liam was exhausted after the skating today, so when I put Rosie down for a nap, he went too after Logan read him two stories. After that, I curled up on the couch with my computer to work, while Logan watched game highlights on his tablet and took notes.

“Is this bothering you?” he asked.

I shook my head. “Nope. Are you taking notes about what you’re watching?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “Yeah. Trying to figure out their strategy so we can beat them this week. Riley’s all about looking at our stats and video. He’s a great defenseman. I wish I was as good as him.”

“You are as good. You’re in the league too.”

“Yeah, but I’m on a two-way contract, and it’s up after this year, so I’m worried they’ll not re-sign me next year.”

“Look, I don’t know hockey, but if your team and coaches are happy with you, that should be good enough.”

“I gotta be better. I need stability for Liam. I want a long-term no-move contract, but I have to work hard to get that.”

I nodded. “Okay, I understand, but he has stability. Even though you’re not around a lot, he knows you love him, and he adores Mari. She’ll do everything to take care of him.”

He reached out and squeezed my hand. “Thanks for talking me off the ledge.”

“Sure,” I told him with a smile.

“Thanks for coming today. It was fun,” he said after a few minutes of silence had passed between us.

I grinned. “It was. It’s nice to bring the kids out with us.”

He laid his hand on my thigh. “Can I convince you to stay over again?”

“If you stop touching me like that and let me work.”

He gave me a sheepish look and pulled away. “Sorry. I like spending time with you.”

It looked like he was going to say something else, but he went back to his tablet. I was aware we were spending a lot of time together, time we said we didn’t have, but sitting beside him as we both worked while the kids napped felt so natural. Like I could see myself doing this every day.

I worked for a little while longer, but my phone buzzed next to me. I saw a text from Veronica that got my hackles up.
