V: Hey, some guy came looking for you at the shop.
ME: Who?
V: No clue. Just FYI.
The hair on the back of my neck raised. Something was seriously wrong. I didn’t know what it was, but something was off. Who was this guy? And what did he want with me?
I pushed away the fear for the time being. Tonight was all about spending time with Logan before he left again. I’d get work done now, and then I’d give myself over to him later once the kids were in bed.
“You’re still here?” my sister asked the next morning as I walked into the kitchen dressed and ready to head back to Mom’s house.
Logan was rushing around getting dressed in his suit, with the kids clinging onto his legs. He was enjoying it and pretending to be a monster to make them laugh.
“Yeah, they might be a handful today,” I said. “They were already so cranky when we reminded them Logan was leaving.”
Mari sighed. “Liam acts out when he’s gone. He misses his uncle so much. It’s cute, but I wish I could tell him how to handle those big emotions.”
I shrugged.
She crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow at me. “But you stayed all day and night again, huh?”
I nodded. “Mmmhmm.”
After the kids woke up from their nap yesterday, we spent the rest of the day with them, and then Logan and I got dinner ready and started with their nighttime routine. When we read them a story together, with Rosie in Logan’s lap and Liam in mine, it all felt so natural. Then we had adult time in his bedroom.
It all felt so right, and I had to remind myself it felt that way because we were in our single-parent routine. But when he looked into my eyes while he made slow love to me, our souls joined. My heart was getting big ideas, and my brain was screaming at me not to make the same mistakes.
“Lil, admit he’s your boyfriend already. You’re in a relationship,” my sister urged.
I shook my head. We weren’t. We don’t have time for that. “We’re just friends.”
She rolled her eyes. “Hey, so off-topic, but Mom said someone was looking for you last night.”
I stared at her, frozen in fear. That was the third time I’d heard about this. The only logical explanation I thought of someone not telling people who they were was because it was my father. “It wasn’t the sperm donor?”
Mari shook her head. “Mom would have called him ‘your asshole father.’ She said he seemed cagey.”
Was this Seth? Was he spying on me? Having someone come after me? I wasn’t sure what to make of it. I got a queasy feeling in my stomach at not knowing.
Logan came into the kitchen with both the kids in his arms. They clung to him like little monkeys. He wore that charcoal grey suit that looked amazing on him, and I laughed when I noticed he had a Mario tie on.
“I have two stage-five clingers,” he told me with a smile.
I took Rosie from his arms and put her in her high chair. Mari guided Liam to the table and supplied him with crayons and paper. I went over to Logan and smoothed down his tie. “Who picked this one?”
He laughed. “They both did. Boys are gonna give me hell about it.”
I smiled.
“I gotta go. I’ll see you when I get back?”
I nodded.
He leaned down and captured my lips in a kiss that ended far too soon for my liking, and then he was out the door.
My sister gave me an annoyed look when I sighed a little as he left. “Lil.”
“Don’t start,” I muttered. I walked over to Rosie and gave her a kiss on the forehead. “Okay, baby, mommy’s gotta go do work today. Be good for Aunt Mari, okay?”
