Mayhem understood. “Wolves.” Moon nodded, and Chrome accelerated. Chris reached beneath her seat and pulled out a gun, and Mayhem smiled. “You’re prepared.”
“Always,” Chris said.
The first wolf appeared seconds later. He was huge and gray, running alongside the tree line. Chrome swore. “There.” A second emerged behind it and then, a third.
Moon grabbed Mayhem's arm. “Don't shift.”
“I know,” he said.
The wolves accelerated, and Chris lowered her window. Chrome glanced over at her. “What are you doing?”
“My job,” she said.
“At sixty miles an hour?” he asked.
“Just drive,” she ordered. Chris leaned partially out, and Chrome grabbed the back of her kutte with one hand.
“Don't fucking fall,” he ordered.
She looked back at him. “Let go.”
“No,” he said. “Just shoot the wolves.”
Mayhem laughed, and Moon stared at him. “This is funny?”
“It is just a little bit funny,” he insisted. Chris fired. The first wolf veered away as the second lunged toward the SUV. Chris fired again, and it dropped. The third disappeared into the trees.
“Where'd it go?” Chrome demanded.
Moon closed her eyes, and Mayhem felt her wolf reach outward. “Left.”
Chrome swerved as a massive black shape flew from the trees where the SUV had been seconds earlier. “Holy shit,” Chris muttered.
Mayhem stared at Moon. “You saw that?”
“Yes,” she said.
Pride hit him so hard it almost hurt. “That's my girl.” Moon looked at him, and he expected an argument. Instead, she just smiled at him, and Mayhem stopped breathing. His wolf exploded with satisfaction.
Chris looked back. “Did we just have a relationship breakthrough during a wolf attack?”
Moon's cheeks turned red, and Mayhem grinned. “Yep.”
“Congratulations,” Chris mumbled.
“Thank you,” Mayhem said. Moon covered her face.
Something slammed into the SUV. The vehicle swerved, and Chrome fought the wheel. “What the fuck?” A wolf had landed on the roof. Claws scraped metal, and Moon looked up.
“Mayhem,” Moon shouted.
“I know.” The roof dented, and Chris aimed upward.
“Don't shoot through the roof!” Chrome shouted.
“Got a better idea?” Chris asked.
“Yes, don't shoot me!” Chrome said. The wolf tore at the metal, and Mayhem's claws emerged.
