Rex snorts. “You okay there?”
“It’s freezing!”
Fletcher’s mouth twitches.
Wayne’s hand comes up, brushing my arm once in silent reassurance.
Then the wand presses down, and everything in the room seems to shift.
I stare at the ceiling, afraid to look at the screen.
Afraid of what I’ll see.
Afraid of what I won’t.
“Okay,” the technician says gently. “Let’s take a look.”
I turn my head.
The screen flickers into a grainy, abstract, and completely, utterly unreal dance of shapes.
And then…
“There,” she says softly.
My breath catches.
A small shape.
Tiny.
Barely anything.
But there.
“That’s your baby.”
My hand flies to my mouth.
“Oh,” I whisper.
Beside me, Wayne goes completely still.
Fletcher leans closer.
Rex steps forward without even realizing he’s doing it.
It’s quiet for a long moment.
The kind of quiet that feels sacred.
“That’s…” I choke out a laugh. “That’s real?”
“Very real,” the technician assures me.
My eyes sting, and my chest seems to fill with air like a balloon.
I didn’t think I’d feel like this.
