I thought I’d be overwhelmed.
Terrified.
Confused.
And I am all of those things, a little.
But mostly… I feel wonder... a sense of awe.
“That’s… that’s my baby,” I repeat, more softly this time.
Wayne’s hand tightens slightly against my arm.
Rex exhales slowly.
Fletcher doesn’t say anything, but his hand finds the edge of the bed near mine, close enough to touch if I need it.
The technician tilts her head slightly.
“Hang on a second,” she says.
My stomach drops. “What is it?”
Her brow furrows in concentration. She adjusts the wand, angling it slightly.
“There’s…” she starts, then stops.
My heart is suddenly pounding again, but for a completely different reason this time.
“Is something wrong?” I whisper.
She smiles.
“No, no, nothing’s wrong,” she says quickly, glancing at me. “But this could be a little more... exciting than you expected.”
I blink. “Exciting how?”
She turns the screen slightly, pointing. “Look right there.”
I follow her finger.
And then…
Oh.
Oh!
My brain struggles to catch up with the fact that there’s not just one shape now.
There are two.
“That’s…” I laugh, which seems to be the only thing my body knows how to do right now. “Wait.”
Rex leans in. “Am I seeing that right?”
Fletcher murmurs. “Yeah. You are.”
Wayne doesn’t say anything, he just stares.
