Staring out the windshield, she asks, “Didn’t you do enough already?”
Is she mad I kissed her? It didn’t seem like she was in the moment. Or is it because I went after Guy? He put his hands on her. He’s lucky he’s still breathing.
“No,” I answer truthfully because I didn’t. I let her get hurt. I shouldn’t’ve hid in my truck. I should’ve pulled her blindfold off and claimed her properly, face-to-face, then she wouldn’t have had any reason to go looking for Guy.
Kota relocates her gaze to me, her eyes flicking between mine.
“Did you have to hit him so hard?”
“Yes.”
“Is he going to survive?”
“Unfortunately.”
Those eyes lower down my face, linger on my neck, then find a resting place on my chest.
“I’m sorry about…” This is embarrassing to do with my friends here. “The bitch thing. I didn’t mean you were—”
“Whatever,” she huffs.
I grit my teeth. I did mean she was mine though.
“Here.” I hold up the hoodie.
“I don’t want it.”
“As soon as your adrenaline wears off, you will.”
I begin helping Kota into it. It’s the same one I gave her before—as well as peeled off her. She doesn’t stop me but she doesn’t necessarily help with the process either. After getting it over her head, I tug it down to cover most of her dress.
“So, as I was saying, sailors need their libations—”
“Dex,” I grit.
“Huh?”
“Your sister.”
“Tina!” he yells toward the roof. “Shut. Up.”
“I cannot.”
“You literally can.” As he pretends to staple her lips shut with his thumb and pointer finger, he tells her, “All you have to do is put your lips together and then never open them again.”
She smacks said lips. “I will not.”
Fuck’s sake.
“Better?” I ask Kota.
I don’t think she blinks as she drones, “I feel like I just lost a hundred and sixty-two pounds.”
That makes me grin. Yeah, she did. Fuck Guy.
Tina praises, “That’s the spirit!”
Dex’s sister talks the entire way out of the Wandering Rocks Woods.
