I rip my shirt off, so she can see the evidence for herself. She owns me. Her. No one else. Never anyone else.
Her bottom lip trembles at the sight, but she doesn’t respond. She sure as hell doesn’t reciprocate.
I reach around her to snatch the keys out of her hand. She can’t drive like this. Her eyes are waterlogged, her mind a wreck. She’ll crash before she gets out of the parking lot.
“Catch a ride with someone else. Give me enough time to go home and get my stuff.”
Her chest is heaving as she stares up at me, and for a second, I think she might take it all back, accept my lack of answers because she does know me. She knows my heart. All she has to do is look down and see it in her grasp.
“Give me my fucking keys, Khaos.”
I study her for a moment, memorizing her features for the last time. Would she try to drive if I gave her the keys?
Maybe.
Probably.
Stubborn girl.
My girl. God, I’m going to miss her. Every-fucking-thing about her.
No fight left in me, I bend down and capture her lips with mine. She doesn’t respond whatsoever, which I think actually kills me more than if I hadn’t kissed her at all.
Pulling back an inch, I stare into those dusty blues, and tell her, “I love you. Your keys will be in your room.”
With that, I turn and I…leave.
I said I would if she told me to and she did. So I am. I’m leaving. I’m letting her go.
Goddamn it. God-fucking-damn it!
Her keys dig into my palm as I walk away from her, each step like pulling part of my intestines out. When I finally make it to my truck, I’m in agony. My eyes are waterlogged, my mind’s a wreck, and I have no idea how the fuck I’m supposed to drive without crashing.
I doubt I’d fucking feel anything if I did, except maybe—maybe—relief.
“Is he dead?”
“Honestly? I’m not sure.”
“Oof.”
“Yeah.”
“Any idea what happened?”
“She ended things.”
“Obviously.” Without looking, I can tell a hand is being thrust in my direction. “But why?”
“He didn’t say.”
“I’m getting flashbacks to the beginning of summer. The sulking we thought would never end.”
“At least he went home at night during that dark time.”
“So we get to keep him now?”
“Well, I do.”
