7 Minutes in Sea Haven

A dark figure steps forward, looming in the doorway.

“Khaos?”

When he doesn’t say anything, fear courses through my bloodstream, making me shake so hard I fumble with my phone as I attempt to turn on the flashlight.

“Who—”

All at once, the figure rushes toward me. Just before it reaches me, my phone’s flashlight kicks on, illuminating the face.

That’s…not Khaos.

Unable to sleep, I scroll through song after song, hunting for any I can add to the playlists I’m making for Kota that convey what I wish I could say to her but will never get the chance to. I don’t know when, or if, Kota will ever see them, but I’m really hoping curiosity gets the better of her one day and she looks. Maybe then she’ll believe it was real for me.

Kota’s face appears on my screen, the one I assigned to her contact info.

She’s calling.

I shoot up to sitting.

She’s calling me. At four o’clock in the morning.

Did she listen to the playlists?

Hitting the green button, I put the phone up to my ear.

“Hello?”

“Khaos?”

Why is she asking that? Did she not mean to call me?

“Um, yeah, it’s me.” Dumb thing to say. I guess it’s better than “Please take me back. I’m dying without you and don’t think I’ll survive much longer.”

“Can you come home?”

Home.

I’m up off the couch in an instant.

“Is everything okay?”

“There’s—” It sounds like she pulls the phone away.

It’s silent for so long I have to check the screen to make sure the call didn’t disconnect.

“Kota? Are you there?”

“Khaos, can you please just come home? Now?”

“Yeah. Yes. I’ll be right there.”

Keys in hand, I’m already jogging out of the front door of Dex’s bachelor pad/the Mathewses’ guesthouse.

“Hurry.”

She hangs up before I can ask why.

I swear to fucking God this better not have anything to do with Guy fucking Humphries.
