“Wind,” Jack says.

When the leaves finally move, William and Bruce stand together talking. Then they move off frame.

“That’s it?” I lift my gaze to Jack.

That’s nothing.

There’s no proof that a crime happened. No evidence that my dad is dead. Nothing that would convict any of them. This just shows my dad was there that night. We knew that, but they could claim he left after he and William Foster got in a fight.

“The headlights are there for a little longer, and then they leave. They don’t show up on screen again.” Jack takes his tablet. “We’re still reviewing the days after to see if anyone comes back.”

“So we don’t know anything new?” I lean back in the chair and cover my eyes. The trail camera was a bust. I’d hoped for so much more, even though I was afraid of what we’d find.

“We know our dads knew your dad was there.” Caden leans forward and touches my knee. “It’s not proof of murder, but we know they know what happened.”

“We already knew that.” I’m so frustrated. I was seriously counting on a smoking gun to get William Foster to back the fuck off. If we had proof, we could go home. Luke would be free. And as much as I love shacking up with Jack, I want my room and my bed. I want something close to normal. At least for a while.

“There’s more evidence out there, sweetheart.” Jack tips my chin toward him. “We’ll find it. It’s just going to take time.”

I blow out a breath. Time. Always fucking time.

Harper’s phone

Kenz:

So it’s safe to still send texts right?

Me:

I think so

As long as we don’t say anything important

Kenz:

When have we ever said anything important to each other?

Me:

I mean, there was that diatribe we went through while watching Fear the Walking Dead

Kenz:

Ah yes, the I can’t wait for all these people to die seasons

Me:

Exactly

Kenz:

We need to find a new show we can watch together

Me:

We do

I’m in the world’s most awkward slumber party right now
