Mom starts serving the waffles, adding one to her plate and mine before passing them on. She gives me a generous portion of strawberries and puts some on her plate before adding the whipped cream.
“Will my memories come back?” I turn and look at my mom. If anyone knows, she does.
She gives me a sad smile. “We don’t know. You had a bad reaction to the drugs they gave you. There was a small amount of a drug that would cause some retrograde amnesia, but it’s possible your brain just can’t handle the trauma of what you went through right now.”
She reaches out and tucks a wet strand of hair behind my ear. “The guys can probably fill you in, but from all accounts, you fought every step of the way. I’m so proud of you, Harper.”
Her eyes glisten with unshed tears. She wraps me in a side hug, and I draw in her coconut scent as I lean into her warmth. I can’t imagine what she’s going through right now. All I know is she made sure I woke up surrounded by my guys.
And for that, I’m grateful. They center me and give me strength.
Eli clears his throat. “We should eat while these are still warm.”
Mom and I pull away from each other. As we separate, someone clears their throat from the doorway.
Penny stands there looking unsure. She’s holding hands with Will.
Luke smiles at her and gestures for her to join us.
I cock my head. When did that happen? Luke’s always been wary of her, even though she’s his sister, but he actually looks happy to see her. And she and Will walk in close together like they don’t want to be separated.
I shake my head and take a bite of waffle. Someone will explain eventually. Hopefully.
“How are you, Harper?” Penny asks as she sits and fills a plate, passing it to Will with a brief kiss before filling her own.
Is my mouth open? Because a lot happened between those two in less than twenty-four hours. I snap my jaw shut.
“I’m okay.” I smile.
“She doesn’t remember anything,” Luke explains. “At least not since before the Homecoming announcement.”
“Oh.” Penny gives me a sad smile but then brightens when she looks at the others. “Who won?”
“Won?” Eli asks with a cocked eyebrow.
I’m assuming we did, since we’re sitting at the breakfast table and the others are in jail.
Penny tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “Homecoming king and queen?”
“Luke and Ashley.” Jack sits back in his chair and holds his hand against his ribs.
“Are you hurt?” I ask quietly. I haven’t even taken the time to check on all of my guys.
Jack smiles and takes my hand. “Only when I breathe.” He brings our hands to his lips and kisses my knuckles. “I got beat up a few times last night.”
Caden clears his throat. “Can we tell her what happened or do we need to wait for the FBI to question her?”
“I called the agent and Cameron before I started the waffles.” Mom sits up a little straighter. “They should be here shortly.”
I release my breath. I don’t know how good of a witness I’ll be if I don’t remember anything.
“Fine.” Jack smirks. “But I can tell her how we all got home from the hospital. That won’t be in the questions.”
Eli and Nico groan, but Caden grins and winks at me.
“Go ahead, Jack.” Luke’s eyes lock with mine, and they dance with amusement.
“So, because of... things last night, we all ended up at the hospital without cars.” Jack’s smile is crooked.
