He holds out his hand to me, and even if I hadn’t seen him at senior night, I would have recognized him as Eli’s father. The similarities are striking.
I take his hand, and he shakes it briefly. He looks around the room, and his gaze falls on Eli. “This is agent James Perkins. He’s going to wait here for a moment while I talk to Harper somewhere alone.”
As one, my guys rise to their feet.
“Where she goes, we go.” Eli gives his father a look as if to say, test us. I’m glad he said it. I’m not ready to be away from them.
Cameron smiles and holds up his hands in surrender. His smile is casual but his eyes are taking in everything. “Of course.”
Caden gestures with his head, and we all turn to follow him down the hallway to an office. He opens the door and holds it while we file inside. My mom steps in last.
“Yeah, I’m part of this motley crew too.” She walks over to the chair Eli gestures for her to sit in.
Cameron nods. His gaze lingers on my mom. “Of course, Jenn. I didn’t mean to exclude you.”
Jack leads me to the chair next to my mom, and I take a seat.
Cameron leans against the desk and studies me. It’s unnerving because it’s so like Eli. I cross my legs, aware that I’m basically in frumpy pajamas. Caden is in jeans and a t-shirt while the others are in various pajama pants and t-shirts, except Jack has on ducky scrubs for pants.
Why didn’t I notice that before?
“Harper?” Mom says.
“Yeah?” I look around at everyone looking at me. Shit. Did I miss something?
“She’s still a little hungover from the drugs.” Mom studies my eyes closely. “Cameron asked you a question.”
My cheeks heat. Well that’s embarrassing.
“I’m sorry.” I try to smile at Cameron, but there’s so much I’m missing.
“It’s okay, Harper.” Cameron releases a breath and squats in front of me, so I don’t have to tip my head back to look up at him. “You don’t have to answer any questions now if you don’t want to, but it gives them a baseline. Only you know what happened to you.”
“I don’t know anything,” I say quietly. “I don’t remember anything until waking up this morning. Before that I was dancing with Eli.”
“Which time, kitten?”
My gaze goes to Eli. “What do you mean?”
“You danced with me twice.” He squats down next to his dad and the resemblance is eerie, like I’m seeing future Eli. “Was it the first time we danced or the second time after the Homecoming court was announced?”
I try to think.
“Do you remember dancing with the rest of us?” Luke’s eyes search mine.
I nod. Luke and I danced so close it’s like I couldn’t tell where I began and he ended. I wanted that moment to last forever. So many moments I wish I’d been able to stay in.
“That’s good.” Eli touches my knee, and I put my hand over his. “Maybe you’ll remember more.”
“None of you have told her what happened, correct?” Cameron glances around at my guys.
“No. Just that she wasn’t sexually assaulted last night.” Jack leans against the window with his arms wrapped around his waist. He’s paler than normal. Is he in pain? I fight the urge to rise and go put my arms around him.
Cameron nods. “That’s a good thing to know. We don’t want to taint her memories by planting any accidentally.”
“That’s fine.” Mom takes my hand. “But what is she going to tell the agent?”
Cameron smiles. “What she knows. If she gets more memories later, we’ll come back in and answer more questions. You’re going to do fine, Harper.”
