“One of the guys with Brody that night.”
My stomach tightens. “The night that man died?”
“Yeah.”
“What did he do?”
Dane’s phone buzzes and he opens a link.
I move closer.
A local reporter stands outside the sheriff’s department. Beneath her is a photograph of a man I don’t recognize.
I scan the story.
“Oh my God.”
Dane says nothing.
Eric Nolan gave a statement.
Not only about Brody’s newest accusation.
About the original case.
He admits Brody fabricated the story that Dane followed them into the parking lot. Eric says Dane had already left. He says Brody panicked after the man died and convinced the others that blaming Dane was their best chance of avoiding prison.
They all agreed.
Three men.
One lie.
Eighteen months of Dane’s life.
Ten years of whispers.
Killer Miller.
I look at him. “Dane.”
He puts the phone on the nightstand.
“That’s all you’re going to do?”
“What do you want me to do?”
“I don’t know. Yell. Celebrate. Punch something.”
“Didn’t go great last time.”
I touch his face. “Everyone knows you told the truth.”
His eyes hold mine. “Yeah.”
I wait for something bigger but it doesn’t come. “You don’t seem happy.”
He looks toward the window. “Thought I would be.”
