When The Fair Goes Dark

They?

Get?

Really?

In to it?

The actors?

My mind flashes with a masked man with a bone mask and a creepy grin. His presence was unsettling, but not necessarily uncomfortable.

“Run?”

“It will be fine. Just make sure you get your stamp when you get your night ticket.”

I look down at my phone before I just thumbs it up and sit it down beside me. A weird feeling crosses me as I replay her messages, and just how vague they sounded.

I was taking my dad’s “car” tonight in case I needed to leave early or something, per his request.

Glancing back over to my clothes I had hanging up, I second guess my choice as I think about her words.

Maybe it was an immersive type of haunted attraction or something? Why else would I need to run? I can only recall a distant memory of going to a haunted house years ago, and when I started running, they usually stopped.

Standing up, I go to my closet and glance at the amount of clothing I brought with me. Shorts, tights, jeans.

I pull out another pair of shorts before discarding them. Maybe leggings would help out in case I fell or something.

But, then I thought about how hot it is outside, and how the chill won’t come out until much later.

Something freeing……..

Maybe a sundress?

I slipped out the hanger that held a black summer dress that came with a pair of shorts underneath it.

Practical and easy, I thought as I slipped it off the hanger and slid it on my body.

Walking over the mirror, I looked at myself before noticing my bra straps were showing. Looking down, I decide to forego the bra since I didn’t have much to work with anyways, plus the dress was a little supportive.

I grab my tennis shoes from the bottom of the closet and look down at how beat up they were. Sighing, I decided to try and get some new ones on my first check, and put on a pair of socks.

Then, my white sneakers.

Once I am done, I walk back over and give myself a once over.

My long, blonde hair hung down my back and front in waves after it was in braids all day. My skin was lightly tanned from being outside, with a slight red tint to it. I kept my makeup light, and tried to be light handed since the fair part was in the dead time for the sun to be out.

My dress formed my body pretty well, and it went down a little past my butt once I turned around. I tug at it a little, but it does no good. Luckily, I had shorts under it, so a breeze wasn’t going to be a problem.

Looking down at my nails, I cringe when I see the nails that I bit into last night staring back at me. I wish I had the money to get a manicure or something. But then, I think of how hard my mom worked to provide for me and Ryan, and the FOMO goes away.

Grabbing my bottle of lotion, I smear it all over my body in the parts I missed, and spray some five dollar perfume I got from the dollar store.

I put on some chap stick and wiped under my eyes to make sure my mascara didn’t run. All in all, not too bad. The brightness in my hair brings out my green eyes more, but I couldn’t help but to compare my body to those I went to school with.

They had boobs.

They had a lot more to work with than I did.
