“It’s what it sounds like. A carnival.” he says. “But with a twist.”
A twist?
“Like?”
“Can we go ride rides?” One of the guys asks as they walk up to us.
“Let’s do it.” I agree just letting it go.
ELEVEN
I’m having even more fun that I was last year.
It was magical.
We just got off the Ferris wheel, and my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. I know my face was shining with a light sheen from the afternoon sun beaming down, but luckily it’s been a few hours and it’s starting to descend.
My eyes find the big clock and the time read 7:00.
Less than an hour before the carnival begins, and I couldn’t wait.
“I am so thirsty.” I say as I look for a concession stand.
“Right this way.” Charlie comes up, and grabs my elbow to direct me to the nearest one.
A man was standing at the register as we walked up, and my eyes widened as I see that it was Samuel.
From the bookstore.
“Well, hello there beautiful stranger.” he says when he looks up at me, recognition shining in his eyes.
He was wearing the black polo with the fairs logo on the pocket area, and dark slacks.
“What’s up Sam?” Charlie says as he slides an arm to rest over my shoulder.
He’s done it quite a few times, and I haven’t had the heart to tell him to knock it off. It seemed harmless, even though I know there’s an underlying reason as to why he’s doing it. I just didn’t feel any butterflies or attraction to him.
Samuel’s eyes glance to where Charlie just put his arm, and arches a brow.
“Already trying to claim the new goddess Charlie boy?”
Damn, the compliments just kept coming.
“Hey, I met her last year.” is all he says back, not even attempting to correct Samuel’s claim itself.
“Right.” he says back sarcastically.
I nonchalantly moved a little out of the way, which had Charlies hand gliding off of me.
“Can I just get a lemonade?” I ask, already pulling out my wallet.
Samuel nods before telling the other worker the order.
I slide my money over, before he shakes his head no and slides it back.
“Your money is no good here.” he says.
He slides over the drink.
