Confused, I look around because how the hell does he just keep disappearing?
I step out of the doorway, and see Charlie running my way with one of the actor behind him, chainsaw roaring above his head.
“Let’s go!” I yell and scream to the next door.
FOURTEEN
I saw the mask three more times that night.
None of them were him.
At least, I didn’t think they were.
That was the problem.
Every flash of black made my heart jump. Every masked face across the midway had me looking twice, searching for something I couldn’t explain.
The way he stood.
The tilt of his head.
Something.
But he never found me again.
Or maybe he did, and I just didn’t know it.
By the time we reached the gates, we found Willow and the others, and the carnival was still screaming behind us.
I should’ve been exhausted.
Instead, I could still feel his hand around my waist. The press of his lips against my own.
“Rave.”
I turn my head as we keep walking to Willow.
“Yeah?”
“You’ve been weird for, like, an hour.”
I looked at her. “I’m not being weird.”
I knew I fucking was.
“You haven’t stopped looking behind you.”
“Not true.”
She gave me a look.
I ignored it.
Because there I was, doing it again.
Searching.
Hoping.
